Sicily Airport Stays Shut Due To Volcano Eruption

Catania airport in Sicily stayed shut on Monday due to an ongoing eruption of nearby Mount Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, airport officials said

Catania, along with the smaller airport of Comiso, was closed on Sunday due to the clouds of ash in the sky.

The company that manages Catania, Società Aeroporto Catania (SAC),said the “direction and intensity of the wind” meant that ash from the eruption was a danger to flights.

Dozens of flights were cancelled on Monday and were re-routed to Palermo also in Sicily or to Reggio Calabria in the neighbouring Calabria region.

Eruptions on Etna are relatively frequent but the latest activity, which began on Saturday, is the most intense in several months.

The lava flow can be seen from Catania and Taormina.

110 mph EF1 Tornado Touches Down In Palm Coast, Florida, America

Cleanup efforts are underway in Palm Coast, Fla., after a tornado barreled through the area Saturday night.

 

The tornado, which the National Weather Service on Sunday assigned a preliminary rating of EF1, is believed to be the first to hit the city, Palm Coast spokeswoman Cindi Lane told ABC News Radio. There is evidence winds may have reached 110 miles per hour.

In total, 171 Palm Coast houses were affected by the storms: 142 houses were partially damaged, 22 houses sustained moderate damage, and seven homes were destroyed. No injuries were reported.

 

Utility crews were working Sunday to restore power to the area.
