A plane with 29 people aboard made an unscheduled landing at the Peoria airport Tuesday morning just minutes after taking off due to an equipment problem.
No injuries were reported after Delta flight 5346 reported a stuck flap soon after taking off for Detroit, initiating a level-one emergency response call to police and firefighters.
“That starts the process for mutual aid,” said Gen. Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport Director Gene Olson. “I think the reason they went to a level one is because of the roads out there and how long it could take some people to respond.”
The flap on the aircraft in question creates lift during takeoff and drag during landing, but when extended prevents the aircraft from attaining a faster cruising speed.
“It’s one of the devices that allows the plane to fly slower for landing,” Olson said.
The aircraft took off shortly after 7 a.m. but did not land for more than an hour and a half. The plane circled to burn off fuel so it could have a landing weight within regulations.
Olson said similar flight diversions happen at the Peoria airport six to eight times per year, but the call for a level-one emergency was made out of an “abundance of caution.”
“You get emergency responders headed that way in case something goes wrong down the road,” Olson said.
A single-engine aircraft hit a ditch Tuesday afternoon, but the pilot was not hurt after a propeller came off near Willow Park in Parker County, according to early reports.
The incident happened about 3 p.m. The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating, said Lynn Lunsford, a spokesman for the agency in Fort Worth.
A “single-engine plane was flying when the propeller separated from the aircraft,” Lundsford said. “As far as I know, this was a pleasure flight. The pilot made a forced landing at the Willow Park racetrack. During the landing, the aircraft hit a ditch. The pilot was not injured.”
