Massive Snowstorm Strikes Russia

Weather Alert

April came to Moscow with a massive snowstorm after more than 10 centimetres (four inches) of snow fell on the Russian capital in less than 24 hours.

Snow blanketed streets in the early hours on Tuesday (April 1) with the Kremlin barely visible from the distance in heavy snow.

More than 10,000 snowploughs were deployed on Moscow roads to battle the elements, as streets were clogged in big traffic jams.

Meteorologists say the snowstorm will continue throughout the day on Tuesday.

It came just a week after Moscovites and tourists enjoyed unusually warm weather with temperatures rising last Tuesday (March 25) to 16 degrees Celsius (64.4 Fahrenheit) in some areas of the Russian capital.

Temperatures in March broke eight all-time records. The warmest ever March day in Moscow fell on March 24 – the temperature of 18.8 degrees has never been seen before in 130 years of weather monitoring history in Moscow.

Hailstorm Then Heavy Rain Lashes Oman

Light to moderate rains accompanied by hailstorms was witnessed in different parts of Muscat and Sohar, Tuesday evening.

“Quriyat, Samail, Barka and Al Khabourah witnessed light to moderate in the afternoon. Even though, some wadis are overflowing and roads are flooded so far no untoward incidents have been reported.

The rains started at around 3 pm and remained till 5pm in many areas. Some of the areas are also enveloped by dense fog,” said Bader Ali Al Baddaei, one of the administrators of rthmc.net, a local web-based forum that discusses weather trends in Oman.

“The fog and hailstorm has affected the movement of vehicles on the roads. Traffic jams are witnessed in many areas,” Bader added.

On Monday, heavy fog enveloped many parts of Muttrah in Muscat. According to residents in and around the Muttrah Corniche area, fog enveloped the entire area from 7am and remained till 11am.

Meanwhile, Oman News Agency reported that light rains fell in some villages of the wilayats of Khasab, Bukha, Diba and Madha.

Light rains also fell in the Niyabat Al Rawdhah in the Governorate of Al Buraimi.

The meteorological department in its 48 hours forecast has predicted chances of isolated rain over governorates of Musandam and north Al Batinah.

The Met department has also forecast fog patches over governorates of south Al Sharqiya, Al Wusta and northern Dhofar.

According to officials at the Public Authority of Civil Defence and Ambulance (PACDA), in the last week rain six people died due to rains and flooding affecting most of the northern governorates of Oman.

Hailstorm Whitens Parts Of Napa, USA

Hail in Grass

Central Napa was hit with an intense hailstorm Tuesday morning that whitened the landscape and created moments of awe.

“It was just coming down mountains. The whole ground was covered,” said Raymond Burch, 63, about the icy deluge that started a little after 10:30 a.m.

Many customers outside Peet’s Coffee & Tea at Bel Air Plaza stood under an awning, waiting for the hail storm to easy up, Burch said.  “Weird weather,” he said.

“It was huge,” said Chris Craiker, whose pathway at his Browns Valley received a mantle of white.

At peak accumulation, the depth of the fallen hail measured nearly an inch, Craiker estimated. “It looked like a snowy winter scene,” he said.

Fortunately, this was pea-size hail that didn’t do any damage to his car, Craiker said. But one of his employees reported the occasional chunk the size of a golf ball, he said.

More bouts of hail remained possible the rest of the day Tuesday because of a front sweeping in from the northwest with high-altitude clouds, said Julie Gondzar, a meteorologist with DayWeather Inc.

Since Monday morning, some Napa County locations, such as Mount Veeder and Petrified Forest outside Calistoga, have received as much as 1.5 inches of rain. Totals around the city of Napa on the valley floor were closer to one inch.

Showers should decrease as the week wears on, with the weekend temperatures expected to be in the 70s, said Gondzar. There is a chance of more rain at the end of next week, she said.
