Massive Wildfire North of Osoyoos, Canada

Fire Alert

Wildfire officials are battling a 20-hectare wildfire on Osoyoos Indian Band Land between Oliver and Osoyoos.

Fire Information Officer Kayla Pepper says the fire started late Friday about 7 kilometres north of Osoyoos.

“It is still an active wildfire. Right now crews are working on establishing guard on the south side of the fire,” Pepper said just before 1 p.m. on Saturday. “They’re trying to steer the fire towards some natural rocky features, so by pushing the fire up slope into those areas it won’t burn.”

According to Pepper (as of 1 p.m. Saturday), 10 firefighters are battling the blaze. Investigators are also on scene as they attempt to determine the cause of the wildfire, as it is not part of a prescribed burn.

Pepper anticipates visible smoke in Oliver and Osoyoos throughout Saturday afternoon and perhaps into Sunday.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says passengers on a cruise ship that sailed out of Baltimore became sick on board during two consecutive voyages.

According to the CDC website, about 100 passengers and crew members on the Grandeur of the Seas became ill with vomiting and diarrhea. It left April 5 for a seven-day cruise.

A spokeswoman for ship owner Royal Caribbean Cruises in an email confirmed the illnesses and said a norovirus was believed to be the cause.

The CDC also reported that about 100 passengers and crew members became ill on the Grandeur during its sailing from March 28 to April 5.

The agency says three of its staff will board the ship when it returns to Baltimore Saturday to investigate the most recent outbreak.
