Landslide in Tajikistan Leaves 6 Dead, 7 Missing

Landslide Alert

A spokesman for the Emergency Ministry reported on Sunday that six children were killed and seven people went missing and are presumed dead after a mudslide hit south Tajikistan. Floods and landslides are common in the country as more than 90% of its territory is covered by mountains. The mudslide took place on Saturday evening in a village located near the border with Afghanistan. Spokesman Orif Nozimov said there were so many victims because the tragedy struck in the middle of the night when majority of the local residents were sleeping. He added that the death toll could be higher than what was initially estimated.

Wildfire consumes 500 homes, kills 11 in Chile

Wind creates dangerous fire conditions in populated areas
Chile wildfires Valparaiso
Chile poured firefighters and police into the battle against a wildfire that swept through hundreds of homes in the Pacific coastal city of Valparaiso, leaving at least 11 dead.

That toll was expected to rise as more than 1,200 firefighters worked to control the wind-whipped blaze in Valparaiso and the suburb of Vina del Mar, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet said Sunday. About 500 homes had been destroyed by Sunday morning, and 10,000 people had been forced to flee, Bachelet said.

The wind hampered firefighters’ ability to create firebreaks, and the blaze had spread to nearly 2,000 acres, according to Chile’s National Emergency Office.

“It’s been one of the worst fires in history,” said Fernando Reseio, the fire superintendent in Vina del Mar.

Bachelet said the firefighters were backed up by 17 aircraft and that additional police were being brought in to prevent looting in the areas abandoned by their residents. Many of the survivors suffered burns, and the most seriously burned patients were being transferred to hospitals in the capital, Santiago, about 80 kilometers (50 miles) away, the president said.

In images broadcast by CNN sister network CNN Chile, residents could be seen fleeing the flames overnight. The network reported that the sweeping fire is endangering thousands more homes.

In addition, plans were being drawn up to evacuate inmates at Valparaiso prison as a preventive measure, Mayor Jorge Castro said. The city is under a red alert, said emergency office spokesman Ricardo Toro.

Earlier, Bachelet had declared a state of emergency, which legally allows armed forces to get involved.

Quake triggers landslide in Tibet

Landslide Alert

A trunk road linking Tibet with neighboring Sichuan Province was blocked by a landslide Sunday morning, after a minor earth tremor hit Nyingchi Region in Tibet.

The earthquake measuring 3.1 on the Richter Scale hit Nyingchi Prefecture in southwest China’s Tibet Autonomous Region at midnight, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.

The landslide occurred at about 8:50 a.m. and left debris blocking a 75-meter section of the Sichuan-Tibet road near Tongmai Bridge in Nyingchi. No casualties were reported.

By 2 p.m., about 300 vehicles and 1,000 people were stranded on the road, according to local traffic police.

Road maintenance workers are working to clear the road. Police said traffic is expected to resume before dusk.

30-tonnes landslide strikes Penarth beach, Wales

Landslide at Penarth

Emergency services are dealing with a large landslide on to a beach in the Vale of Glamorgan.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service say 30 tonnes of the cliff face near Penarth pier has come away, but there are no reports of anyone being trapped.

Five crews attended the scene at 12:40 BST and work has been carried out to make the area made safe and prevent any further collapse.

No properties are believed to have been put at risk.

Police and local authorities have cordoned off part of the beach and made the area safe.

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: “The council are currently reviewing the landslip to make sure that it is safe.

“Residents have been informed in the immediate vicinity. We don’t believe at the current time that it presents any danger.

“The affected area has been cordoned off and we are maintaining a police presence to make sure nobody breaches that cordon.”

A spokeswoman for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said 22 firefighters attended the incident.

“We surveyed the area to make sure it was safe, cordoned off the area and made sure there were no people involved and no properties at risk,” she said.
