Record Heatwave descends on Myanmar
Record-breaking high temperatures are expected in many parts of Myanmar, according to Tun Lwin, the former head of the Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
The ultraviolet (UV) index began spiking above 11, an extreme level, at the beginning of April and it could reach a scorching 15.1 in Shan and Karenni states in the coming weeks and then continue at similar levels until the monsoon rains arrive, he told DVB.
According to recent data, the UV index in Yangon, Pegu and Tenasserim divisions is 14.1, while it was 14.2 in Irrawaddy Division, 14.6 in Karenni State, and 14.4 in southern and eastern Shan State.
The Health Ministry has warned that unprotected exposure to UV rays can cause sunstroke and dehydration, while long-term effects include skin cancer, lowered immunity and eye cataracts.
According to the World Meteorological Organisation, Yangon residents can expect a maximum temperature of 39 degrees Celsius on Friday and Saturday, while those in Mandalay in central Myanmar should get ready for a sizzling 42 degrees Celsius.

RAAF C-130J Hercules aircraft runs off runway in Afghanistan
AN Australian defence plane has overshot a runway in Afghanistan.
No one was injured but the C-130J Hercules aircraft needed to be towed away for inspection after the incident at Kabul International Airport on Wednesday night (AEST).
The aircraft stopped about 70 metres from the runway.
The RAAF issued a statement saying: “Safety is the most important priority for Air Force operations.
“Air Force aircraft are serviced and flown under a very strict and controlled airworthiness and safety system.
“All aircraft are under constant surveillance to ensure that they maintain the highest standards.
“There is minimal impact to operations in the Middle East Area of Operations (MEAO).”
The RAAF has launched an investigation.
Similar RAAF C-130J Hercules aircraft have been used to launch self locating data marker buoys in the southern Indian Ocean as part of the Australian Defence Force’s assistance in the search for missing Malaysia Airlines flight MH370.
