Colorado oil train spill put at 6,500 gallons
The Union Pacific Railroad says 6,500 gallons of oil spilled when a train derailed in northern Colorado on Friday.
A railroad spokeswoman said cleanup operations were still underway Saturday. State officials say the spill was contained to a ditch and didn’t reach the nearby South Platte River.
The railroad says the contaminated soil will be removed and replaced with clean soil.
Six of the 100 cars in a crude oil train derailed west of LaSalle, about 45 miles north of Denver. One car leaked.
Three cars were empty and have been moved. Two-thirds of the oil in another car had been removed by Saturday and another was still full.
Jordan reports 9th corona virus infection
Jordan announced that it has registered a 9th corona virus infection for a male nurse in his 50s working at a private hospital and was one of a cadre that was treating an infected person at the hospital.
The health ministry said the new case was under an epidemiological investigation the ministry started for persons who dealt with infected people, adding that the man was in a stable condition.
The total number of cases registered in the Kingdom since reporting the first case in 2012 rises to 9; four of them died.
One dead in Hamilton Township plane crash, USA
Police were still on the scene Saturday of a plane crash that left one dead and at least one injured Friday night in Hamilton Township.
The plane, a Navion G aircraft, crashed in a wooded area behind a residence near Cologne Avenue and Paddock Street at about 8:30 p.m., according to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
Authorities said two of the four people onboard were able to walk away, while rescue crews removed the other two. The extent of injuries for the survivors was not available. Their identities had not yet been released Saturday.
FAA Spokeswoman Kathleen Bergen said Saturday that the pilot was on approach to Runway 13 of the Atlantic City International Airport when he reported engine problems.
On Saturday, 53-year-old Hamilton Township resident Greg Meyer, himself a local pilot, cycled past the scene after reading media reports.
“This area is right in the approach to the airport,” he said. “Runway 13 is a large runway a lot of small and large planes use.”
Peter Knudson, a spokesman for the National Transportation Safety Board, said the aircraft had a serial number NAV-4-2473.
According to the FAA registry database, the plane was a single-engine Navion G manufactured in 1962. It was registered to RTD Aviation, LLC, based out of Wilmington, Del. Messages left at two phone numbers associated with the company were not returned Saturday.
Knudson said an aircraft recovery company would arrive late Saturday with plans to remove the wreckage by Sunday evening. The crash did not result in a fire, he said.
Similarly, he said, an inspector will be on the scene with a preliminary report expected within five-to-10 business days.
The crash site was calm Saturday morning, with just a few police vehicles parked in the driveway of a private residence. It was a stark contrast of Friday evening when EMTs and firefighters worked late into the night. A number of observers also gathered near the site.
Jim Keefer, a nearby resident, said he heard three loud bangs and thought it was just a truck in the area.
Another resident in the area, Robert Boisvert, said he heard a funny sound – like splitting wood – but didn’t see anything.
