Carlsbad Wildfire
Officials in southern California used loudspeakers to order the mandatory evacuation of 11,600 homes north of San Diego on Wednesday, as more wildfires fed by wind and a heat wave torched the area.

State officials confirmed that the 250-acre brush fire has burned 30 homes in Carlsbad, Calif., and San Diego County declared a local emergency as five separate wildland fires burned there.

Rides at Legoland amusement park were evacuated after power outages caused by the fires knocked out electricity to the park. Evacuation orders have been instituted, and in some cases lifted, for tens of thousands of homes due to the brush fires dotting the San Diego area. Evacuation of military housing at Camp Pendleton, north of San Diego, was ordered as well.

The cause of the fires is not known, but officials say temperatures reaching into the 100s and the ongoing drought in the region make conditions particularly fire-prone.

Two firefighters have been injured fighting the blazes, one with a heat-related injury and another due to smoke inhalation.
Fire moves through a canyon between the Rancho Santa Fe and Fairbanks neighborhoods north of San Diego on May 13, 2014.
