40 TONS of trout dead in Lake Titicaca, Peru
We left at 4 am yesterday from Puno to Juli district. After an hour and a half away, the head of Trout Project Coordinator Rural Fondoempleo, Nancy Montesinos Condo, presented us with a bleak outlook on Lake Highest Navigable World, thousands of dead fish and hundreds of trout producers as in a day of burial.
Around 7 am, with the sun shining the beautiful scenery, we arrived at Sihuayro sector where we find Denis Huaman collecting dead trouts, who tearfully told us that he lost 30 thousand soles capital, then they died 3 tons of trout that were to be sold.
After spending 15 minutes, we went toward the district Pomata, where we find trout cages dragged to the lake, boats smashed, torn screens, Aymara villagers gathered in the lake trout and other dead verifying their cages about 300 meters from the lake. Similar situation was observed in the area of Faro in the same district.
Here the producers had already picked up dead trout and were assembled for the damages that had each producer; greeted with much concern and then in a couple of boats rode the shattered, empty and dead fish in water cages.
Our journey does not end there, with the president of the Federation of Truchicultores and Traders of the South Zone of Puno, Rogelio Segura Laurente, we moved to Chatuma where bleak picture was repeated. Here the president of the association in this area, Simon Pari, reports that most producers lost their capital and many banks have loans worth more than 10 billion suns amount.
Close at 11 am we completed visits to the most affected areas and our return Rogelio Segura and Nancy Montesinos, estimated that 410 trout producers of 11 associations, lost about 5 million soles for the death of 160 thousand units trout with a total weight of about 40 tons.
You need to remember that it is the third time that producers are affected by the waves; however, the authorities did not perform any action to counter the problem. Producers called for the implementation of the Fisheries Security and contingency plans of the Regional Government of Puno.
