Flood evacuation alert issued & a Spring surprise of heavy snow strikes parts of Canada

Floodwater evacuation alert issued in Clearwater as B.C. hit with spring storm that also dumped snow on Coquihalla

A powerful storm moving through B.C. has residents of Clearwater on evacuation alert, while winter driving conditions along the Coquihalla Highway turned treacherous with an unexpected dump of spring snow.

Residents north of the District of Clearwater, Upper Clearwater and Clearwater Valley Road have been put on evacuation alert and should be ready to leave their homes at a moment’s notice.

A flood warning has been put in place for the Clearwater River area.

A reception centre at the North Thompson Sportsplex in Clearwater is being prepared.

Some areas around B.C. are expected to get more than 40 millimetres of rain, causing the B.C. River Forecast Centre to put out warnings of flood risk in the upcoming days.

High streamflow advisories are also in place for several waterways in the North Thompson-Cariboo and also for small to medium-sized watersheds in the East and West Kootenay around Nelson, Cranbrook, Fernie and Golden.

The Quesnel River and Horsefly River are also under a flood watch. Residents there are being advised to be ready to evacuate in a hurry.

The road near the summit of the Coquihalla Highway was still being cleared of snow Wednesday morning after the unexpected 15 centimetres of snow.
