Firefighters battle to contain western Marin wildfire, California, USA

The large response assisted by air support helped limit the growth of the fire which was the first significant wildfire of the season in Marin. By noon, fire crews had the blaze 50 percent contained.
“Things are looking pretty good now as the weather works in the firefighters’ favor,” Marin County Fire Department Battalion Chief Mike Giannini said. “I’m optimistic that crews will be able to strengthen the containment line.”
Authorities said the fire was called in at 4:47 a.m. and crews first responded from stations in Woodacre, Hicks Valley and Point Reyes Station.
The first crew arrived at 5:01 a.m.
After daylight, the fire moved slowly toward 1,466-foot Mount Barnabe on the north side of Sir Francis Drake Boulevard, which cuts through the park.
Marin County Fire had about 40 personnel tending to the fire and about 150 Calfire firefighters.
Land-based equipment included nine engines, two water tenders and two bulldozers. Calfire brought in crews from throughout the North Bay region and provided mutual aid at Marin County Fire stations along with other agencies.
Giannini said air support was utilized in the late morning after a fog layer dissipated. Four drops were made by fixed-wing aircraft and a helicopter made bucket drops with water from Kent Lake.
There were no injuries reported, no structures threatened and no evacuations at the park, Giannini said.
Investigators had yet to determine the source of the fire.
The park remains open, but trails in the area are closed. California State Parks rangers are turning away hikers near the fire.
