Extreme hailstorm unleashes complete havoc in Florence, Italy
The Italian city of Florence has been hit by a violent hail storm which destroyed terrace bars in a central square and injured five people when a primary school collapsed in an outlying village.
It also flooded the market of San Lorenzo in the historic centre
Other outlying areas were struck by a whirlwind.
Officials ordered the closure of many of the city’s museums including the famous Uffizi Gallery, to check for damage to any of the works of art.
Alert level 2 raised as water levels rise alarmingly in Marikina River, Philippines
Residents near the Marikina River were advised to prepare for possible evacuation early Friday after Alert Level 2 was raised over the river after hours of heavy rain.
As of 4:10 a.m., the water level at the river reached 16 meters, the Marikina City government said.
Level 2, when the water is 16 meters above sea level, means “maghanda (prepare).” Level 3, when the water is 17 meters above sea level, means “lumikas (evacuate).”
The fourth, Critical Level, is adopted when the water is 18 or more meters above sea level, and forced evacuation is implemented.
Tropical storm alert warning in Taiwan
Taiwan’s meteorology authority issued land and sea warnings on Friday as Tropical Storm Fung-Wong approaches the island.
Its weather bureau forecast that the storm center is likely to land in the south on Friday night, before moving northwards up the island.
It urged Pingtung, the southernmost county in the island, to brace for Fung-Wong, which is likely to bring fierce gales and heavy rainfalls to the region.
The bureau also warned of high coastal waves, urging boats in the Bashi Channel and the southern waters off Taiwan to be on the alert.
As of 8:30 p.m., Fung-Wong was centered 370 km south of Taiwan’s southernmost tip, moving in a north-northwest-north-northeasterly direction at a speed of 15 km per hour, the bureau said.
The tropical storm also contributed to unusual heat in northern Taiwan. Temperatures in Hsinchu soared to 38.8 degrees Celsius at 12:20 p.m. on Friday, the highest record in the island this year.
The bureau said warm and dry winds from the periphery of Fung-Wong have been blowing down into the valleys of the region, leading to the hot weather.
Temperatures in the northern region are likely to drop a little, with short showers on Saturday. As the storm continues to head north, all parts of Taiwan will be rainy on Sunday, the bureau added.
