Hundreds of fish found dead in a creek in Queensland, Australia

Mackay Recreational Fishing Alliance president Lance Murray with some of the dead fish at Reliance Creek.

THE reason why hundreds of fish died in Reliance Creek, Habana, is still unknown.

Officers from the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection were at the site yesterday.

An EHP spokesman said it was important a thorough investigation was conducted at the freshwater creek.

“Officers took fish and water samples to help in the investigation,” he said.

“No further details are available at this stage.”

Mackay Recreational Fishing Alliance president Lance Murray said the site looked like the scene of a “plane crash”.

“There are dead fish everywhere,” he said.

“There are several different types of fish including barramundi, catfish and more.”

Mr Murray said he was surprised by the large number of fish in the creek.

“It’s a real shame to see them go to waste,” he said.

“We also found a massive barramundi.

“Who would have thought you could catch a 900 millimetre barra in Reliance Creek.”

Mr Murray said he believed the fish kill was due to a “natural phenomenon”.

“The rain we’ve had in the last couple of days has turned the vegetation in the water upside down,” he said.

“This has then taken all the oxygen out of the water.

“This is my first best guess.”

As a safety precaution, EHP has advised people to stay out of the creek and not to take any of the fish to eat.

Thousands of cattle dead from outbreak of disease is a ‘national disaster’ in Masvingo, Zimbabwe

The veterinary services department has banned the sale and slaughter of cattle in five districts in Masvingo province in an effort to contain the outbreaks.

Relevant government departments are facing a severe manpower shortage and do not have sufficient funds to fight the diseases, it also emerged.

“We are trying to make sure that the problem is dealt with once and for all. We declared the outbreaks a national disaster to ensure timely funding,” Agriculture minister, Joseph Made, said.

“The veterinary department had been heavily affected by underfunding and manpower shortages so the availability of funds will ensure that vaccines and manpower are adequately mobilised,” he added.

Masvingo provincial veterinary officer, Enerst Dzimwasha, declined to comment on the new development.

The affected districts include Mwenezi, Chiredzi, Zaka , Chivi ,and Masvingo, with Gutu and Bikita being declared safe as of last week. Public cattle auction sales have been banned.

The slaughter of cattle even for ceremonies such as weddings and funerals has also been suspended amid concerns from villagers.

Dzimwasha last week confirmed the outbreak but refused to give details as to how many cattle have died so far.

“We are currently fighting these two cattle diseases and our men are on the ground to ensure that all the cattle in the affected areas are vaccinated,” said Dzimwasha.

Veterinary services sources said at least 1,000 cattle succumbed to the disease in less than a month.

“Our records indicate that over 1,000 cattle have died in less than a month,” said the source.

“The figure of those that have died could be much higher as reports from the affected districts are still coming in on a daily basis,” added the source.

Villagers in the affected areas have complained bitterly over the order not to slay cattle and called on the veterinary department to individually examine beats meant for slaughter.

Thousands of dead fish found ‘mysteriously’ floating in a lake in London, England

An investigation is underway after thousands of dead fish were found floating in an east London park lake.

The grim discovery was made by volunteers in Harrow Lodge Park, Havering, over the weekend.

Havering Council has launched an environmental health investigation to find out what caused the mass death.

Councillor Melvin Wallace said: “We’re still trying to determine the exact cause of the incident.

“We believe it’s either due to an extensive amount of un-oxygenated water that entered the lake due to the heavy rainfall over the weekend, or a possible pollutant.

“The Environment Agency has tested the water and we’re currently waiting for the results.”

Council staff have since removed the fish from the lake.

It is not the first time animals have died in the lake. Earlier this year several birds contaminated with avian botulism were found dead in the park while 20 ducks were killed by visitors feeding them mouldy bread.

Furthermore, they informed residents not to consume infected poultry products and implemented a number of measures to prevent the outbreak of the virus and prevent poultry-to-human transmission.

Hundreds of dead birds wash ashore ‘due to weather’ in East Lothian, Scotland

Dead gugas on

Large numbers of dead and dying young gannets have been found on the East Lothian coast.

The birds, known as gugas, have been washed ashore after leaving their nests on the Bass Rock in the Firth of Forth.

The Bass Rock is one of the world’s biggest gannet colonies and every autumn between 10,000 and 20,000 young birds leave their nests.

The gugas are heavier than adult gannets and are unable to fly until they lose weight.

Their first few days at sea are perilous and they are unable to feed for themselves so many fail to survive.

The prevailing weather conditions in recent days have led to hundreds of birds being washed ashore.

Wildlife experts said it may be distressing for members of public, but it’s simply “nature in the raw”.

Walkers who find live gugas in distress are being advised to keep their distance and contact the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick or the Scottish SPCA.

Weather change

Tom Brock, chief executive of the Scottish Seabird Centre, said: “We have had a few reports of people finding seabirds washed up on the beaches in and around North Berwick.

“At this time of year, and with the change in weather, it is likely that these will be juvenile gannets, known as gugas.

“Aged just 12 or 13 weeks old, gugas are a similar size to adult gannets but have dark plumage which is speckled with flecks of white.

“After leaving their nests on the Bass Rock, the young gannets, heavier than the adults and unable to fly until they lose weight, will float on the sea for several days.

“No longer under the care of their parents, their last meal would have been in the nest and this can mean that they have not fed for several days. Weakened, and in tough weather conditions, sadly many get into difficulties.”
