Rain batters roads and rail network causing disruption in East Sussex, UK

Surface flooding on roads
East Sussex was battered by torrential rain this morning (Thursday January 8) causing flooding in some areas.

Hailsham Road in Herstmonceux is closed because of flood water, causing delays.

Hailsham Police said Hawks Road in Hailsham is flooded and drivers are also faced with flooding on South Road, Mill Road, Ersham Road, and Salt Marsh Lane in the town. There were also reports of flooding in Dittons Road in Stone Cross.

The wet weather is also causing problems on the railway.

Flooding in the Plumpton area has caused disruption to journeys between Lewes and Haywards Heath.

A spokesman for Network Rail said trains are unable to run from Lewes to Haywards Heath. Passengers travelling from Hastings, Eastbourne and Lewes towards Haywards Heath and London are advised to travel via Brighton. A bus service from Lewes to Haywards Heath is also being organised.

East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service has issued a warning urging drivers to slow down. A spokesman said: “While there are no severe weather warnings in place for this area, the Met Office says there will be heavy rain and strong winds throughout January 8. Road users are being reminded to slow down, leave bigger stopping distances and ensure their vehicles are roadworthy. Home and business owners are being urged to read up on ways to reduce the chances of flooding. Do some research to find out – whether your area has flooded before and if there is any specific flood advice for your area, how to turn off your electricity and gas supplies, what is covered by your insurance, and who you can call if you need assistance.”
