Flash floods hits Las Vegas, USA

A thunderstorm with heavy rains and high winds moved across the Las Vegas area, flooding roads and knocking out power to hundreds.

 

The National Weather Service says parts of the area were under a flash flood warning Monday evening.

 

Las Vegas Fire and Rescue says firefighters handled 10 water rescues.

 

Spokesman Tim Szymanski says most of the drivers were in deep water and needed assistance getting out of their vehicles. There were no reports of injury.

 

The Las Vegas Sun reports that the hardest-hit areas included the Lone Mountain and Summerlin areas.

 

The paper says the National Weather Service reports one area had 1.5 inches of rain, though most areas got much less.

 

It says NV Energy reported that the storm had knocked out power to about 800 Southern Nevada customers as of 8:15 p.m.

Tornado and landslide hit Zamboanga Sur, Philippines

A tornado struck a small village in Pagadian City in Zamboanga del Sur province in southern Philippines, but authorities said there were no reports of casualties, although several houses were destroyed by the swirling vortex of wind and debris.

 

Wilfredo Asoy Jr, of the provincial disaster risk reduction management council, said the tornado hit the village of Kahayagan.

 

The tornado struck just as the region was being battered by heavy rains that triggered flash floods in many areas in Mindanao that had killed at least 6 people.

 

Authorities said the rains also triggered a landslide in he village of Biswangan in Lakewood town also in Zamboanga del Sur.

 

There were also no casualties in the landslide which blocked half of the road.

Landslide sweeps away petrol station in Ca Mau, Vietnam

A landslide destroyed a private petrol station in the southernmost Ca Mau Province

The station was owned by Quach Van Mien, a resident of Lam Hai Commune in Nam Can District. The landslide shook his house and the petrol station, which collapsed into the river within 15 minutes. The family was not able to retrieve its property.

 

Earlier, a sudden landslide at Tran Quoc Toan petrol warehouse in Dong Thap Province on Sunday caused losses of roughly VND15 billion (US$688,000 million). The warehouse, belonging to the Dong Thap Petrol Company, was the largest in the southern province, and was able to store up to 30 million litres of petrol.

 

Three other serious landslides have occurred in the Mekong River Delta, destroying several houses of residents, since the beginning of this month.
