Thousands of dead fish found floating in the River Nile in Beheira, Egypt, Africa

Fish Kill Alert

Thousands of dead fish were seen floating on the Nile River Sunday in Beheira, Delta; more than 1,000 kilos of fish were collected to be eliminated and 200 kilos were seized from vendors in the local market, Youm7 reported.

Water samples were taken every two hours from the river, to make sure that city water was potable, as well as to detect the reasons for the mass fish deaths. The samples will also be taken from drinking water plants.

A committee of representatives from the ministries of health and supply, and the veterinary authority and supply investigations department was formed to conduct a comprehensive scan on fish in all cities that overlook the Rosetta branch of the Nile to eliminate all dead fish.

This is not the first time mass fish deaths in Beheira and the Rosetta branch of the Nile have occurred.

The same incident took place in June, and the officials said it was due to ammonia poisoning and lack of oxygen in the water. The same case was reported in January 2014 in Rosetta city.

The Ministry of Irrigation said in June that the fish suffocated due to hot weather and lack of oxygen in overloaded commercial fish farms concentrated in the area, as well as the blocking of Nile water at the High Dam in south of Egypt in the flooding season which coincides with the summer.

Thousands of privately-owned fish farms, most of which are unauthorized, are seen along the Rosetta branch of the Nile especially around Kafr al-Sheikh governorate; a home to over 25,000 farms.

Irrigation Minister Hossam Moghazy had vowed in June to remove all the commercial fish farms in the area. “It is a matter of national security,” Moghazy was quoted by Youm7.

Hundreds of ‘mysterious eel type fish’ wash up dead in Wasaga Beach, Canada

CTV Barrie: Eels discovered in Nottawasaga Bay
A mystery is unfolding in Wasaga Beach after hundreds of strange looking fish washed up on shore.

Hundreds of eel have recently washed ashore near the mouth of the Nottawasaga River.

The eels have a pointed nose and spots on the tail

“I have never seen this before,” said Rick Baldry with the Georgian Triangle Anglers Association. “This is something completely foreign to my eyes and probably everyone else’s eyes around here.”

The eels have not been positively identified, but appear to be a type of peacock eel that are sometimes raised in aquariums. Those eels are native to the tropical waters in Thailand, India and Burma and can grow to be almost 40 centimetres long.

Baldry is concerned that somebody body must have released the eels into the wild and considering the numbers they must have reproduced too.

“How did they get here, that’s the real concern,” he said.

On Thursday frozen samples of the eels were handed over to the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) for detailed examination. Officials with the MNRF say this is the first known report of peacock eels in the Great Lakes.

According to the MNRF, the eels are not considered and invasive species because they are a tropic fish and they can’t survive a winter here to establish a population

In the meantime, the Ontario Federation of Hunters and Anglers invasive species hotline has been notified.

A sudden, intense thunderstorm led to street-level flooding in parts of Columbia Monday night.

The heavy rains began moving in around 7:30 p.m., and persisted for over two hours. During the downpour, the National Weather Service issued a flash flooding warning for the area.

Some roads were briefly closed when they became covered in water, including frequently flood-prone areas such as Main and Whaley Streets and Gervais Street. Water could be seen swirling around the bottoms of several vehicles that attempted to drive in the water-covered roadways.

But just as soon as the water rose, they began to recede; within an hour of the end of the rain, most roads were passable again.

Heavy rain was also reported in lower Richland County and parts of Sumter County.

Apocalyptic Flooding Ravages Over 2,000 Houses In Kaduna, Nigeria

kaduna flood
At least 2,000 houses in some parts of Kaduna State, Northwest Nigeria, have been submerged by flood as a result of a heavy rainfall.

The flood was said to have been caused by an unusual heavy downpour that lasted for over 48 hours.

The rainfall which started on Saturday night till Monday morning, caused massive floods at Abubakar Kigo road new extension, Barnawa, Ungwar-Rimi, Gonin-Gora, Karatudu, Kachia, Romi among others.

More than 30, 000 people had been forced out of their homes following the incident.

Many roads had also been blocked, making it difficult to get help and supplies to affected areas.

Flooding is common in most parts of Kaduna State during the rainy season.

Channels Television’s Correspondent in Kaduna, said that poor drainage in the affected areas was the cause of the flood.

In 2012, flood killed about seven people, destroyed several houses and farmlands, in what officials said was the worst natural disaster ever to befall the state.

Since then, the State Emergency Management Agency had set up an early warning system to monitor the weather.

About 30 houses were affected by flood in the area as a result of heavy down pour in August.

The residents had, however, refused to comply with NEMA’s directive due to claims of fund to secure new homes.

Instead, they attributed the flood to lack of dredging of the Kaduna River and the opening of a dam by the Cameroonian authorities.

Residents have called on the State Government to dredge the river for easy flow of water during the rainy season.

As the rains continue to pour out, some of the affected residents have started moving out their properties to safer places.
