Hundreds of fish die ‘suddenly’ in a river in Ontario, Canada
The Ministry of the environment of Ontario investigates the cause of the sudden death of hundreds fish in the Beaver River in Eastern Ontario.
Fish lie in the water and on the banks of this river of 175 kilometres which empties into the Ottawa.
The discovery was made at the height of Kenmore, a small rural community located southeast of Ottawa.
The river passes through many agricultural properties.
Cindy Saucier, Councillor in the Township of Russell and environmentalist, says she has seen fish of all sizes to the surface and die.
She also observed frogs who were trying desperately to get out of the water.
“It is clear that there is something that kills fish.”
An excrement of animals from a farm in Dalmeny spill could be the cause of the death of the fish.
Casselman sewage treatment plant has been advised of the situation in a preventive manner.
“Let us hope that this will not have a big impact on the animals that live here. The situation affects everyone. We all live downstream”, concludes Ms. Saucier.

Thousands of dead fish is a ‘mystery’ in a lake in Nagpur, India
One of the beauty spots in the Second capital City of Nagpur, Gandhisagar Lake, turned out a spot of curiosity and horror as well for the citizens. The scenario depicted a horror movie. The nearby residents and passersby witnessed thousands of fish of different species and different sizes dead and floating on surface and accumulated on the shores of Gandhisagar Lake. The mysterious death of tons of fish has caused concerns for environmentalists. Work is going on war-footing to remove the dead fish. On Saturday, around three tons of marine species were disposed of and many more tons are being disposed of.
According to sources, the dead fish in gigantic numbers, both in small and big sizes, are being noticed since Saturday. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation had recently floated tenders for netting fish. It is reported that a fisherman named Vijay bagged the cantract. But when the NMC authorities received the alarming reports of dead fish surfacing and accumulating ashore, they dispatched garbage vehicles and the dead species were taken to Bhandewadi area for disposal. The mysterious death of thousands of fish could put the contractor in financial mess as the fish of different species were bred since the past 6-7 years.

Thousands of fish dead due to a dried up reservoir in California, USA
Residents of Westwood, California are wondering how a nearby reservoir drained, killing most of the fish. Mountain Meadow Reservoir, also known as Walker Lake, is a shallow body of water that emptied during the weekend of September 12. More than a week later, thousands of dead fish are scattered across the muddy lake bed and in the creek below the dam.
56-year-old Eddy Bauer has lived near the lake his entire life. This is the first time he has seen it run dry.
“It’s amazing how many people have come out to see the destruction,” Bauer said. “My wife, for instance, was holding her nose, can’t even stand the smell.”
Walker Lake’s water rights are owned by Pacific Gas and Electric Company. The dam allows them to use the water for hydroelectric power. Paul Moreno is a spokesperson for the company. He says they haven’t used any of the water since March, when they determined there was not enough water to sustain the lake for the rest of the year. That is also when water flows, out of the lake, were reduced to the minimum requirement of four cubic feet per second, to keep fish alive, downstream.
“It’s a situation we worked hard to avoid but the reality is we’re in a serious drought and there are also concerns for the fish that were downstream,” Moreno said.
Moreno said the drought is the main reason why the reservoir drained and that the lake never reached capacity because of low snow runoff.
“The situation, we worked hard to avoid but water conditions, this year, are difficult and we know that drying up the reservoir disappoints area residents,” Moreno said.
Bauer said the situation could have been avoided, saying it is a result of several years of water diversion. Creeks that feed into the lake are still flowing, but the water is being used for agriculture before it reaches Mountain Meadows Reservoir. So, water is flowing out of the lake but none is coming into it.
“They had plenty of time to do something about this, years,” Bauer said. “Everybody gets in a fuss when it’s too late, when we’ve lost our fish.”
Bauer said people were fishing on the lake, September 12. It was empty by the next day, draining like a bathtub, overnight. He said there should have been at least two weeks of water left, giving them enough time to relocate the fish.
“It just makes me feel like they really didn’t want to do a fish rescue and that it was easier just to open that sucker up, Saturday night,” Bauer said.
While Bauer believes flows were increased out of the dam, PG&E says they have been kept at a consistent level since March.
“We want you to know that we take environmental stewardship very seriously,” Moreno said. “It’s one of our company’s top priorities.”
Fish species in Walker Lake include bass, perch, and catfish. Moreno says, luckily, none of them are endangered species. The lake is expected to fill up by the spring but it is unknown how or if the fish will be replaced.

30 TONS of fish have died in the waters of Pangasinan, Philippines
Fisherfolk here who reported a fish kill since the first week of September are clamoring for action and assistance from the city government and the local agriculturist.

Last Monday, close to 100 tons of milkfish had to be harvested early from fishponds in these areas for fear they may go to waste.
City Agriculturist Emma Molina only called the incident a “mild fish kill” resulting from thermal shock caused by the sudden downpour on a very hot Sunday afternoon.
But Dawana said the fish kill is due to a pollution caused by fish pens and cages.

Masses of fish and other sea life dying due to ‘red tide’ along Padre Island, USA
Some of the fishermen said they saw no signs of red tide in the waters.

The heavy hit areas remain north of the Island. The last time red tide occurred at South Padre Island was 2011.

Thousands of dead sea cucumbers wash ashore on Phu Quoc Island in Vietnam
Locals and visitors were surprised to see thousands of the marine animals pushed ashore and fill the beach on Phu Quoc, a district administered by the Mekong Delta province of Kien Giang.
With sea cucumbers usually traded as valuable seafood, local residents immediately rushed to collect the creatures for sale, even though they were all dead. The echinoderms fetch around VND70,000 (US$3.13) a kg.
The operators of nearby hotels, in the meantime, had to have their employees clear the dead sea cucumbers around their premises to prevent pollution.
There could be as much as two tons of sea cucumbers stranded on Phu Quoc, Nguyen Van Long, a local fisherman, told Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper on Sunday.
Long and his family members collected around 100kg of the animals.
There used to be an abundant supply of sea cucumbers along the Phu Quoc beach, but fishermen now have to sail far offshore to find the creatures due to excessive catching, according to Nguyen Van Thuong, a seasoned diver.
“This is the first time I have seen sea cucumbers washed ashore by waves,” he said.
Most senior citizens on the island said the phenomenon was unprecedented and unusual, whereas experts and scientists pointed the finger at the increasingly polluted ecosystem of Phu Quoc.
Sea cucumbers are found in nearly every marine environment, but are most diverse on tropical shallow-water coral reefs, according to biologists.
“But the coral reefs and sea floor around Phu Quoc have been severely damaged by tourism and fishing activities,” Dr. Vu Ngoc Long, head of the Southern Institute of Ecology, commented.
Such methods as blast fishing or fishing dredge have destroyed the habitat of sea cucumbers, and the animals would thus be washed up on the shore easily by rough seas, he elaborated.
Blast fishing or dynamite fishing is the practice of using explosives to stun or kill schools of fish for easy collection, whereas fishing dredge is a kind of dredge which is towed along the bottom of the sea by a fishing boat in order to collect seafood.

1,200 pigs dead due to swine fever in Sucre, Colombia
