Sandra becomes Category 3 hurricane in eastern Pacific

Hurricane Sandra has strengthened to a powerful Category 3 storm off Mexico’s Pacific coast, but there is no current threat to land.

 

The U.S. National Hurricane Center says it’s the strongest hurricane in the eastern Pacific for this late in the year.

 

The hurricane’s maximum sustained winds increased Wednesday afternoon to near 115 mph (185 kph).

 

Sandra is centered about 555 miles (895 kilometers) southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico, and is moving northwest at 8 mph (13 kph).

 

It’s expected to turn to the north-northwest Thursday, and to weaken sometime Thursday or Thursday night.

Severe hail storm devastates growers in Botswana, Africa

A hail storm which swept through Lentsweletau, Botswana, last week Tuesday, has left many farmers with destroyed produce, totalling to over a million pula in value. Many are funded by CEDA and are concerned that they will not be able to pay back their loans.

 

It has been reported that the hail storm hit around 9pm Tuesday evening, and lasted for about 30 minutes. 

 

The crops primarily affected by the storm were reported to be cabbage, butternut squash, and tomatoes.

 

A farmer, also affected by a frost that damaged last season’s crops, said that the biggest challenge is paying her loan with CEDA, as there are claims that her financier did not help the last time there was weather damage.

 

CEDA project Manager Mr Gaolebale Regoeng has said that they will assess the situation and the extent of the damage.

 

Recommendations will be based on the farmer’s request, which is then forwarded to senior management for approval and assistance will be assessed.
