Thousands more birds killed due to avian flu in France

Bird Flu

Three more outbreaks of highly pathogenic avian influenza have been reported in France, bringing the total number of outbreaks to thirteen.

In Landes, an outbreak of the H5N9 strain in Horsarieux was detected in a breeding flock of over three and a half million chickens, ducks and guinea fowl.

Another H5N9 outbreak was found further south, in Arroses in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques region. It affected 1500 breeding ducks.

Finally, a H5N2 outbreak in Manciet in the Gers region (see map below) was detected in a flock of 8300 breeding ducks. 250 of the birds died and the rest were destroyed.

Thousands of birds have already died and been destroyed in these outbreaks.

A third outbreak of low pathogenic avian influenza has also been reported. The H5N2 outbreak occurred in Castelnau de Mandailles in Aveyron region, and affected a flock of 6120 ducks, which were all destroyed.

Tons of different types of fishes and marine animals were washed ashore on Wednesday along the coast of Barangay Bacong, Babatngon, Leyte, a television report said Saturday.

Citing information from the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, a report on “News TV Live” said residents were surprised to see hundreds of dead fish floating near shore during high tide.

Local BFAR officials said some three tons of fish and other aquatic animals have been washed ashore.

The BFAR also said residents had reported that a cargo ship has been docked at nearby oil depot since December 7, and that it is conducting an investigation on what caused the fish mortality.

18,810 chickens killed due to avian flu in Changhua, Taiwan

Bird Flu

A total of 18,810 chickens were culled on a poultry farm in central Taiwan’s Changhua County late Thursday after it was confirmed that they had been infected with the highly pathogenic H5N2 avian influenza, inspection officials said Friday.

Officials first learned about the outbreak after a slaughterhouse in the county told the authorities on Dec. 7 that they had noticed unusual deaths among some of the chickens sent there, said Tung Meng-chih (董孟治), director of Changhua’s Animal Disease Control Center.

Investigations later found that the questionable chickens came from a poultry farm in Changhua’s Jhutang Township, and that the owner of the farm had failed to report unusual deaths in his flock.

Tung said inspection officials later confirmed that the chickens had been infected with H5N2, and followed standard procedures in culling the animals and disinfecting the farm.

The Animal Disease Control Center said it will slap a fine of between NT$50,000 (US$1,523) and NT$1 million on the farm owner as he has violated the law for failing to report abnormalities.

The center urged other farm owners to follow the health condition of their poultry closely and immediately report any suspicious deaths.
