A care home was left teetering on the edge of a cliff after a landslide in Jersey.

Tonnes of rock and soil collapsed in front of the Cheval Roc Nursing and Residential Home at Bonne Nuit harbour after the area was hit by heavy rain and 75mph winds.

The 10 residents that moved in last week have been given the all-clear to stay at the home as engineers said there was no threat to the building’s structure, according to the Jersey Evening Post.

However, the three rooms closest to the cliff will stay unoccupied while engineers continue their assessment, and work to avoid further damage to the cliff, around 100ft high, may be required.

Jersey resident Chris Brookes, 43, took pictures of the scene.

Speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Mr Brookes said: “I couldn’t believe what I saw. It was very scary. This is Mother Nature hitting back.

“It is awful. Apparently the home is structurally safe but how safe can it really be? It has only just been renovated.

“Another home in Jersey is being closed down and a lot of the residents are being moved to the new one.

“What are they going to do in the future? Obviously this is just going to get worse.”

Care home manager Maggie Stobbart-Rowlands said the current situation is not dangerous and that everything was carrying on as normal.

Speaking to the Daily Mail, she said: “There was no impact as no parts of the building fell away and there was no structural damage. No residents needed to move out.

“The rooms where it happened were not open but we won’t be opening them until the engineers have assessed what happened.”
