Thousands of sardines and mackerel appeared yesterday dead on the shores of the laguna Alalay, Cochabamba of. The Mayor’s Office declared emergency, while the Government said to be on alert. Pollution and low oxygenation may be causes.

 

“Indications that this has happened by the decline in the level of oxygen in the water, and that may be due to various reasons, among them there is the degree of pollution, microscopic algae and high temperatures due to global warming”, said Gabriel López, municipal Chief of natural resources management.

 

Environmental engineer added that samples of water and fish, which were taken to laboratories to determine the specific causes of the death of sardines and mackerel were removed. It is medium-sized and very young fish.

 

Lopez said that the larger spices perished not because they are accustomed to the level of oxygen and pollution that exists in the lagoon, located in the South of the city of Cochabamba.

 

“Possibly eggs hatched recently and they could not get used to these conditions, so they left on the shores in search of oxygen and was there that they were killed,” he added. Dead fish occupied at least five cubic meters from the shores of the lagoon. Elected officials were given the task of collecting and cleaning the area.

Population. The large number of fish on the shores of the laguna Alalay, which is 15 minutes by car from the center of the city, caught the attention of the people and the authorities.
