Sizzling Heatwave Moves Into Israel

Heatwave Alert

A particularly sweltering forecast for the first half of the week in Israel had authorities bracing for brush fires Sunday, with no relief expected until Tuesday.

Meteorologists predicted temperatures in Jerusalem would climb to 37ºC (98.6ºF) during the day and drop only to about 28ºC (82.4ºF) at night.

Tel Aviv was set to sizzle at 39ºC (102ºF), down to 25ºC (77ºF) at night; Haifa 25º-38ºC (77º-100ºF); and Tiberias 25º-42ºC (77º-107ºF).

In the south, Beersheba was expected to reach 42ºC (107ºF) during the day and 25ºC at night (77ºF) and in the southern port city of Eilat the temperature was predicted to reach a scorching 45ºC (113ºF) during the day, dropping to 31ºC (89ºF) at night.

High winds from the north were also expected along the coast later on Sunday.

The high temperatures, which are to continue for two days, had forecasters warning of brush fires breaking out.

By Tuesday the heat was predicted to break, with a slight cooling off in most areas and a further drop on Wednesday.

Veteran forecaster Uri Batz told the Walla news website that temperatures could approach records for the month of May.

“The heatwave that will reach our region this week will be unusually long. It will continue for five straight days during which the first two days will be especially hot,” he said.

In Eilat, the record for May was recorded on May 31, 1980, at 45.2ºC (113.36ºF).

Beersheba, in the northern Negev, recorded its highest temperature for the month on May 21, 1970, at 45ºC (113ºF).

April also saw some of the highest temperatures ever for the month in some areas of the country.

More than 50 killed by Bangladesh lightning strikes

lightning-alert.png

Lightning strikes have killed 56 people over the past two days, triggering a panic among some people, Bangladesh authorities said Saturday.

After a nearly weeklong heat wave scorched Bangladesh, thunderstorms hit the country’s 14 districts on Thursday. The storm produced lightning strikes that killed at least 33 people. Another series of lightning strikes Friday killed at least 23 other people.

The lightning strikes also injured scores of other people in the past two days.

Most of the people who died or were injured across the country were working in farmlands or were in open spaces when they were struck, police said.

Strong tropical storms regularly hit Bangladesh ahead of and during the monsoon season, which runs from June to September.
