Historical Snow Event On It’s Way To Tasmania

Winter Weather Alert

THE biggest snow event of winter 2016 is on its way with snow down to sea level forecast on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Tasmania’s sodden north will also get more heavy rain this evening and into tomorrow and Tuesday, with falls of between 20-50mm forecast.

The Bureau of Meteorology has warned of strong and damaging north and north-westerly winds and says some rivers will rise.

Earlier warnings of wind gusts of up to 100km/h were downgraded late this afternoon.

It has put out a moderate warning for the Meander River and minor warnings for the Mersey, Forth and South and North Esk rivers.

The State Emergency Service has advised farmers and graziers on low lying areas to move stock and agricultural equipment to higher ground.

The SES will have volunteer units on standby.

Tasmania Weather Watch says the state could witness a historical snow event on Wednesday with snow possible to sea level in some southern and western parts.

Forty centimetres of snow is forecast for Cradle Mountain and Central Lakes while the Greater Hobart region is expected to be surrounded by snow with falls in high-level suburbs such as Mount Stuart, West Hobart and Mount Nelson.

Some snow may be possible around Brighton and New Norfolk as well.

Snow is also likely to get very close to the coast in the north.

The SES advises:

Drive to the conditions – Do not drive, walk, swim or cycle through flood waters;

People clearing debris near rivers should take necessary precautions due to rapid water rises and possibility of shifting debris;

Beware of damaged trees and power lines, due to the saturated ground, trees may fall under weaker winds;

Farmers and graziers on low lying areas are advised to move stock and agricultural equipment to higher ground;

Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment – trampolines are a frequent issue in high winds;

Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings;

Manage pets and livestock;

Be prepared in case of power outages;

Stay abreast of road closures by monitoring the Tasmania Police website;

Ensure drains and gutters are clear of debris and are running freely;

Disaster preparedness is a shared responsibility;

Listen to the ABC radio or check ses. tas. gov. au for further advice.
