Hundreds of dead whitefish found in Yellowstone River, Montana, USA

Fish Kill Alert
State wildlife officials found hundreds of dead whitefish in the Yellowstone River above Livingston on Friday, confirming reports of a large-scale fish kill.

Montana Fish, Wildlife and Parks said in a news release that staff found 382 dead whitefish on the east bank of the river during a float from the Loch Leven Fishing Access Site to Pine Creek Fishing Access Site.

“We consider this to be a significant event,” FWP regional supervisor Sam Sheppard said in the release. “Whitefish play an important role in the ecosystem and can be an indicator of overall river health.”

A cause is unknown at this time. The release said that the agency staff on the float collected samples that a fish and disease health lab will analyze.

The fish found were of all age classes. Two crews will head back to the river on Saturday to look for more fish and to collect more samples.

FWP spokeswoman Andrea Jones said that whitefish “can be an early indicator of issues” with river health.

Hundreds of dead starfish and other fish washing up dead in Coogee, Australia

Fish Kill Alert
Environmental and fisheries authorities are investigating the mystery deaths of hundreds of fish along the lower reaches of the Swan River and nearby beaches.

The departments of Parks and Wildlife and Fisheries this week confirmed about 300 dead starfish had been found at various locations since earlier this month.

While up to 200 dead starfish were initially found along beaches in North Coogee, dozens more were discovered on the banks of the lower Swan River.

The latest find involved about 80 fish “sparsely scattered” along the shoreline of Point Resolution in Dalkeith last Friday.

Although similar events have been noted by authorities before, Fisheries said the exact cause of the mass starfish deaths was unknown and it was being investigated.

The fish kill, which did not involve any other species, comes amid heightened levels of microalgae in the Swan River’s lower reaches.

There is also a standing alert issued for parts of the lower Canning River around Salter Point advising people not to eat wild shellfish from the area.

However, Fisheries has indicated there is no link between the starfish deaths and the alert or the high microalgae levels.

Instead, it suggested they could be related to “life cycle” events or the recent storms that brought big swells and high tides.

“Some animals perish when they are reproductively active/spawning and this is part of their natural life cycle,” Fisheries’ biosecurity branch manager Victoria Aitken said.
