Crews Battle Fire At Dept. of Agriculture In Beltsville, Maryland, USA

Thousands of dead fish found in a temple pond in Tamil Nadu, India

Thousands Of Dead Fish At Tamil Nadu Temple Tank
Thousands of dead fish were found in the tank of a famous temple in Tamil Nadu’s Madurai on Sunday. The fish were found at the Sri Subramaniya Swamy temple’s tank, a major sources of ground water in the area.

Samples of the water have been sent for testing and the fish have been removed. The district administration has also ordered an investigation. Local people suspect the tank might have been poisoned over a business rivalry over fishing rights.

Collector K Veera Raghava Rao told NDTV: “We will take strict action once the reports come.”

The dead fish started surfacing on Saturday evening and by Sunday morning, many fish had died and a strong stench had started coming from the tank, one of five at the temple.

Local residents have opposed the temple’s move to hand over fishing rights through an auction last year, reportedly at Rs.47,000 a year.

Believed by devotees to be one of six homes of Lord Muruga, the tank is spread over an area of about 15 acres and is used by devotees for a ritual bath before the temple visit.

The water body impacts ground water table. Well known environmentalist Piyush Manush says “Normally if poisoned it is like end of the lake, restoration doesn’t happen anyway as there’s no flow of water. The only way is you empty the lake and wait for rains. There’s no deterrent, nowhere in Tamil Nadu we’ve heard action being taken against or those responsible being arrested.”

Thousands of fish, particularly mullet, are washing up on a beach near occupied Vokolidha in the north, and more found floating at the edges of a small lake near Galateia in the same area, according to reports in the Turkish Cypriot press on Monday.

Reports said the lake water had turned reddish and suggested it was because it was polluted but ‘local authorities’ denied this though conceding that tests had not been done on it yet. They said it was possibly due to reduction of oxygenation in the lake water. Kibris said that residents in the area of the lake near to the beach were concerned.

When it came to the fish on the beach, the local ‘mayor’ said the water there had been tested and it was not the reason the fish had died, he said. He criticised the media for suggesting the seawater was polluted when it was not true, according to Afrika.
