Trees have been snapped off and roofs removed by a Category 3 hurricane that has roared over the British territory of Bermuda.

Hurricane Nicole pummelled the Atlantic resort island with winds up to 115mph (185kph).

Video footage showed small boats being thrown around in the choppy surf and palm trees being bent by the high winds buffeting Mullet Bay in the northern suburb of St George’s.

The storm also left homes flooded and knocked out power to more than 26,000 houses.

The damage was limited because the homes on the island are built to withstand heavy weather.

The 65,000 people who live on the island had a temporary lull when the eye of the storm passed overhead, forcing the authorities to urge everyone to stay inside.

The Royal Bermuda Regiment has been working to remove uprooted trees and other debris from roads.

By early Thursday evening local time, the storm had moved on and was 130 miles (208km) northeast of Bermuda.

It had maximum sustained winds of 115 mph (185kph) with stronger gusts and was moving northeast at 18mph (30kph).

But there remained fears the hurricane’s trail could continue to endanger Bermuda due to a storm surge that had the potential to lift the normal tides by as much as 8ft (2.4 metres).

The National Hurricane Center said it was expected to continue in that direction, towards the mid Atlantic, over the weekend, and to weaken to a Category 1.
