Caldwell fire officials said a train engine derailed west of Caldwell on Wednesday afternoon. The accident happened near Simplot Boulevard, also known as Idaho 19, near the intersection of Top Road.

Battalion Chief Brad Carico said ice built up in the flangeways — the openings that run parallel to the tracks making way for a train’s wheel flanges — caused the derailment.

“Normally the ice would break as the train passed. But in this case, the ice was tougher than the locomotive,” said Carico.

There were no injuries. The train remained upright. The train was pulling mostly empty cars.

China confirms another human bird flu case, second case in three days

Bird Flu
China health authorities confirmed a new case of a man being infected by the H7N9 strain of avian influenza, state news agency Xinhua said late on Saturday.

According to Xinhua, a 53-year-old man is being treated in hospital in the southern China province of Jiangxi provincial and is in a critical condition.

Till date, China has reported a total of 17 bird flu infected people and at least two of them have died. Since October, China has culled more than 170,000 birds in four provinces and has closed some live poultry markets after people and birds were infected by strains of the avian flu.

China suffered the last major bird flu outbreak from late 2013 to early 2014 that had killed 36 people and led to more than US$6 billion in losses for the agricultural sector. Earlier this month, Shanghai, the largest city of China with more than 24 million residents, has also already reported one human case of H7N9 infection.

The virus was first reported in humans in Hong Kong in 1997. Reports say six people had died and subsequent outbreaks have killed hundreds more worldwide.

China’s Ministry of Agriculture said on Friday that the recent outbreak of the virus have been handled in a “timely and effective” manner. It did not spread and have not affected chicken products or prices.

The farmers have also increased cleaning regimes, animal detention techniques, and built roofs to cover hen pens, among other steps, to prevent the disease.

Two people die of MERS in Saudi

MERS Virus Alert
Two people have died of the Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in southern Saudi Arabia, Saudi’s Ministry of Health has reported.

One of the victims was a man in his 60s from Mahayil Asir while the other was a man in his 70s, Saudi Gazette reported.

In a report late last month, the World Health Organisation confirmed that the kingdom reported 10 additional MERS cases between December 6-13 including two fatalities.

They include – a 72-year-old man in Taif city; a 64-year-old woman in Buridah city, Qassim; a 59-year-old man in Mahayl Assir city; a 49-year-old man in Jeddah; a 53-year-old male man in Riyadh; a 24-year-old man in Hofouf city, Al Ahssa; a 78-year-old man in Riyadh; and a 58-year-old man in Afif city, Riyadh.

The victims include a 60-year-old man in Mahayl Assir city and a 56-year-old man in Riyadh city, WHO stated.

Globally, since September 2012, WHO has been notified of 1,864 laboratory-confirmed cases of infection with MERS-CoV including at least 659 related deaths.

The Gulf countries have been seeing a seasonal surge in the number of MERS infections during the early part of the year, a trend that has worried health experts.

However, the number of deaths caused by MERS has comparatively reduced due to increased vigilance from the region’s health officials.

Saudi Arabia has replaced its health ministers twice since the outbreak of the disease in 2012. Health authorities in the kingdom have also urged residents to refrain from consuming camel meat or milk over fears of the disease spreading.

MERS, a virus similar to SARS, is a respiratory disease that causes coughing, fever and breathing problems, and can lead to pneumonia and kidney failure.

The virus is known to be contracted through exposure to infected individuals, from hospitals and by direct contact with camels – believed to be carriers of the virus.

There is no cure or vaccine for MERS, which kills around 40 per cent of its victims.
