Passengers evacuated from Southern Rail train as it catches fire at West Croydon, UK

Fire Alert_1
Passengers had to be evacuated from a Southern Rail train this afternoon, when part of a carriage caught fire at West Croydon station.

Two crews of firefighters from Croydon Fire Station were called to the railway station on London Road shortly after 2.30pm.

They spent almost 30 minutes at West Croydon putting out the fire, which was inside a stationary train at platform 3.

Officers from British Transport Police (BTP) are currently at the scene, and a spokesman for the London Fire Brigade explained it is investigating the cause of the fire.

The spokesman said: “We were called at 2.34pm to reports of a carriage being damaged by a fire. The carriage was evacuated before the brigade arrived.

“Everything was under control by 3.03pm and the cause of the fire is not yet known, and is still under investigation.”

As a result of the incident scores of trains have been cancelled or delayed this afternoon, and the disruption is expected to last into the rush hour.

A statement on National Rail’s website has warned passengers to expect severe delays to Southern and London Overground services.

It said: “Train services running through West Croydon maybe cancelled or delayed. Disruption is expected until 5.30pm.

“[Because] of a fire on a train on platform 3 at West Croydon Southern trains cannot run from Sutton to Selhurst or Norwood Junction.

“Southern trains between London Bridge and West Croydon via Streatham will run between London Bridge and East Croydon via Streatham.

“London Overground trains may be delayed.”
