Massive fish deaths found washed up on the shores of Los Santos, Panama
Lots of fish on the Pacific coast of Azuero, died stranded along the Beach El Toro, Pedasí district, in the province of Los Santos.
Fishermen in the region reported that they observed on the coast sharks, adult and young, who came to the shore behind the school to feed themselves.
The Ministry of the environment received a complaint about this unusual mortality of fish sighted in El Toro, Pedasi, beach and “was attended by technicians of the institution, who proceeded to identify the species of fish found, as well as taking samples of water and dead specimens,” details a statement of the entity.
According to the technical staff, “the cause most likely this event is mainly the suffocation of fish due to lack of oxygen”.
Environment authorities recommend that those fish are not ingested by people and identified the species of anchoveta (Cetengraulis SP.), as Cetengraulis mysticetus or bocona anchovy, by their common name.
