Hundreds of dead fish wash up in Sao Jose de Ribamar, Brazil
Hundreds of fish were found dead at Porto do Vieira, in São José de Ribamar, on Thursday (20), and so far the authorities have no explanation for the fact. The Municipal Environment Secretariat (Semam) requested support for technical teams from the Brazilian Environment Institute (Ibama) and the State Secretariat of Environment (Sema). Ribamar is part of the Metropolitan Region of São Luís.
A team from Semam reported that it had carried out a large survey in the area of the stream and ruled out “the possibility of clandestine fishing using a net or even capping at points in the stream that could cause the fish to die.”
Ribamar’s Environment Secretary Nelson Weber was at the scene and spoke on the case.
“We were going through the igarapé to inspect and raise the causes for such a death. Discarded this possibility, now we will try to find out whether the cause was natural or whether some kind of oxygenation, “said the secretary.
