Giant Chinese seafood supplier Zhangzidao Group on Tuesday said it found more than 80% of scallops at a farm in the sea between China and Korea had died due to “unidentified” causes.

The book value of the affected mollusks is 300 million yuan ($43 million), the company said in a statement to the Shenzhen stock exchange. It’s still assessing the damage, and the cause of death is unknown though believed to be natural, it said.

Zhangzidao’s “ocean ranch” supplies more than 50,000 tons of scallops a year, according to its official website. Just over 100,000 tons of the bivalve were traded globally in 2018, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, with China accounting for one third of both imports and exports.

The ecological environment in the North Yellow Sea is complicated and constantly changing, Zhangzidao said in its statement. Scallops accounted for 6% of total revenue in the first nine months of this year, it said.

According to information confirmed by official Zimbabwean authorities to the BBC News Africa, at least 200 elephants died due to lack of food and water due to the severe drought in the country. As a measure of urgency and to avoid new deceased specimens, it is studied to transfer hundreds of pachyderms from their current location to other national parks with better benefits.

Hundreds of dead rats that washed up on a West Coast beach, have been removed

The carcasses of hundreds of dead rats that mysteriously washed up on a West Coast beach on Saturday, have been cleaned up.

A spokesperson for the Department of Conservation (DoC) said on Sunday afternoon about 600 rat carcasses had been removed from Westport’s North Beach and a follow-up inspection did not find any more carcasses above the high tide lines. Dead fish and birds in the area have also been removed.

The cause of the animals’ death still remains unknown. Samples from the rats were being urgently tested, but according to the spokesperson, the results will only be available Monday late afternoon at the earliest.
