China’s Hubei province, the epicenter of a lethal viral outbreak, has reported 81 news deaths and a further 2,147 new cases of infection on Sunday morning, bringing the worldwide disease toll to over 37,000, with at least 806 fatalities.

Three more passengers stranded aboard a quarantined cruise ship off the coast of Japan have tested positive for coronavirus, the country’s Health Ministry said on Saturday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases on the vessel to 64.
While the quarantine period for the ship was initially set for two weeks, a health official has clarified that it would be extended each time a new case was confirmed on the vessel, currently stuck at the port of Yokohama with around 3,700 people on board.
Some 279 passengers – either showing signs of illness or coming into close contact with those who do – have undergone tests for the virus. To date, each infected passenger has been transferred from the ship to medical facilities around Japan.
With its epicenter in the Chinese city of Wuhan, the fast-moving outbreak has killed over 700 people and infected more than 34,000 since it was first observed in December, the majority of them in China.

Both illnesses are types of coronavirus which are thought to be genetically close.
More people have been killed by the new coronavirus than the 2003 SARS outbreak, according to latest figures.
A total of 805 people have died from 2019-nCoV, dubbed the Wuhan virus, compared to 774 killed by SARS.

The majority of deaths from the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak are concentrated in mainland China, although there has been one death in the Philippines and another in Hong Kong.
The first victim to be officially identified was 34-year-old doctor Li Wenliang, who died on Friday after testing positive for the virus, Chinese state media said.
Dr Li had been one of the first to warn about the new virus but was punished by authorities for “rumour-mongering”.
He became ill after treating a patient with the virus at Wuhan Central Hospital.
Although the number of deaths from the Wuhan virus now outnumber SARS deaths, the fatality rate is lower for the Wuhan virus.
The fatality rate for SARS was 9.6%, while around 2% of those who contracted the Wuhan virus have died.
