A pilot died and another parachuted to safety when two planes collided at an airshow in northern Switzerland.

The two aircraft touched in mid-air just before crashing in the hillside village of Dittingen near Basel at about 11.15am local time today.

The automatic rescue system of the first plane did not activate and the 50-year-old pilot, whose identity has not been revealed, was inside the aircraft as it crashed into a barn in the centre of Dittingen. Nobody else was hurt in the crash.

The pilot of the second plane managed to escape by parachute and was not injured. His aircraft crashed close to a house on the edge of the village.

The two aircraft were part of a formation of three C-42b planes from Germany called Grasshoppers. The third plane in the formation wasn’t involved in the crash and landed safely, police said.

Photos show debris from the two aircraft scattered across Dittingen and prosecutors have begun investigating.

Two years ago, a Swedish pilot crash-landed his Blériot XI, a replica of the French aircraft famous for being the first plane to cross the English Channel in 1909, at the Dittingen airshow.

The pilot sustained minor injuries in the incident.

On Saturday, at least 11 people died and more than a dozen were injured after a military plane participating in the Shoreham Airshow near Brighton crashed into a busy road.

The Hawker Hunter fighter jet hit several vehicles on a nearby road as it crashed.

Witnesses told local TV that the jet appeared to have crashed when it failed to pull out of a loop maneuver.
