Two asteroids set to cross Earth’s orbit just hours apart as another Great Pyramid-sized space rock barrels our way #Asteroids #Earth #NASA

asteroid-alert

Two 100-meter-wide asteroids are set to cross Earth’s orbit within hours of each other in the coming days as another space rock, the size of ancient Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza, careens towards our planet.

NASA’s Center for Near Earth Object Studies, which tracks asteroids and comets that will come close to Earth, has confirmed that it is monitoring two asteroids that are due to hurtle past on Friday, September 25. Both bodies are classed as Apollo asteroids, meaning they will cross Earth’s orbit as they fly through space.

The first asteroid, which is named 2020 RO, is estimated to be up to 130 meters wide. It will fly past on September 25 at 00:10 EST at a speed of 11.84km per second.

The second asteroid, named 2020 SM, is expected to sail past Earth later that day, at a speed of 18.43 km per second. The slightly smaller space rock is estimated to measure up to 100 meters in diameter.

Although both asteroids are classed as near-Earth objects (NEOs) they are forecast to sail safely past our planet, despite coming into contact with its orbit. They were both discovered this year.

On September 29, a giant 200-meter-wide asteroid will silently pass Earth at a distance of around 1.78 million miles. The enormous visitor is comparable in size to Ancient Egypt’s Great Pyramid of Giza.

The interesting spate of asteroidal activity comes hot on the heels of an amateur astronomer in Brazil discovering a large asteroid that somehow slipped past Earth’s main planetary defenses just last month.

The discovery served as a reminder to the world’s space agencies that there are still many asteroids out there that have yet to be detected.

Three HUGE asteroids headed towards Earth, after amateur astronomer spots massive space rock our planetary defenses MISSED #Asteroids #Earth #NASA

asteroid-alert

Scientists are getting better at spotting inbound, “potentially hazardous” asteroids, with three more measuring over 15 meters in diameter on the way this week. However, asteroid hunters missed a 1,000m space rock just last month.

The Earth is under near-constant threat from space debris in the form of asteroids and meteorites, and this week is no exception, with two smaller space rocks due to buzz the planet today and tomorrow.

Meanwhile, later in the week, NASA gave the ‘heads up’ about three asteroids, each measuring over 15 meters.

On September 16, asteroid 2020 RW3, which measures roughly 18m in diameter (or twice as long as a London bus) will shoot past the Earth at a distance of 2.5 million km.

The week’s asteroidal assault will conclude on Thursday with two much larger space rocks: the 30-meter 2020RN1 (twice the height of the Hollywood sign) and the 62-meter 2014 QJ33 (30 Shaquille O’Neals stacked on top of each other), which will pass at a safe distance of seven million and 2.5 million km respectively.

Lest anyone get too comfortable though, in yet another reminder that humanity must remain ever-vigilant for spaceborne threats, an amateur astronomer in Brazil discovered a large asteroid that somehow slipped past Earth’s main planetary defenses just last month.

Asteroid 2020 QU6, measuring 1,000 meters wide, large enough to inflict significant damage here on Earth if it hit, was spotted by amateur astronomer Leonardo Amaral based at the Campo dos Amarais observatory in Brazil, on August 27.

Mercifully it passed us at a distance of 40 million kilometers, over 100 times the distance between Earth and the moon, on September 10.

Amaral managed to spot the asteroid thanks to his somewhat unique vantage point as he is based in the southern hemisphere, whereas many of our asteroid-hunter telescopes are based in the northern hemisphere.

“This discovery reminds us that even though we’ve found most large NEOs [Near-Earth Objects] we haven’t found all of them,” said Casey Dreier, chief advocate and senior space policy adviser for The Planetary Society.

Asteroid double the size of Pyramid Giza to enter Earth’s orbit on 6th September 2020 #Asteroid #Earth #Apollo #NASA

asteroid-alert

The massive asteroid has been classified as an Apollo asteroid because it crosses Earth’s orbit. It was first spotted by astronomers a decade ago and called 465824 (2010 FR).

National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has been tracking an asteroid which is twice as big as the iconic Egyptian monument, Pyramid of Giza. The gigantic celestial object is expected to collide with Earth’s orbit at around 15:30 IST on September 6. As per the reports, the asteroid is up to 270 metre wide and 886 feet tall.

The massive asteroid has been classified as an Apollo asteroid because it crosses Earth’s orbit. It was first spotted by astronomers a decade ago and called 465824 (2010 FR).

However, scientists at the Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS) confirmed that like many asteroids that have been spotted to fly by our planet of late, it won’t be a threat.

According to NASA, a NEO is a term used to describe “comets and asteroids that have been nudged by the gravitational attraction of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter the Earth’s neighbourhood”.

The asteroid in question is a NEO as well as it is within 1.3 astronomical units from the Sun (1au = 14,95,97,871 kilometres).

Even though asteroids like these are harmless because of their distance from Earth, they can come closer than expected due to the gravitational pull of other planets which can result in a change in the trajectory of their orbit. Not only this, but the Yarkovsky effect can also nudge an asteroid orbit. The change in orbit takes place when an asteroid absorbs sunlight and then re-emits that energy as heat or radiation.

“Occasionally, asteroids’ orbital paths are influenced by the gravitational tug of planets, which cause their paths to alter. Scientists believe stray asteroids or fragments from earlier collisions have slammed into Earth in the past, playing a major role in the evolution of our planet,” NASA said.

Also, On September 1, asteroid 2011 ES4 will be closer to our planet than the Moon. The estimated distance of the asteroid from Earth is 1.2 lakh km. Another asteroid named 2020 QG5 is approaching Earth again after 16 years on the same day. Both these asteroids won’t be a threat to our planet as well because of the distance and its small size which will be destroyed upon entering Earth’s atmosphere.

An asteroid just made the closest fly-by of Earth ever recorded… and nobody saw it coming #Asteroid #Earth

asteroid-alert

A car-sized asteroid just skimmed past Earth in the closest space rock fly-by ever recorded. And none of our planetary defense systems saw it coming until it had already passed by.

Asteroid 2020QG whizzed past Earth at a distance of less than 3,000 kilometers, meaning it came closer than the vast majority of commercial satellites that orbit Earth. The remarkably close shave means the space rock jumps straight to the top of Earth’s close calls with asteroids. This is despite the database stretching back over 100 years.

Astronomers at the Palomar Observatory in California first spotted the asteroid six hours after it flew by Earth. Observations suggest the space rock came closest to Earth when it flew over the Southern Hemisphere just after 4am Universal Time on Sunday.

Experts say 2020QG posed little risk to Earth as it would likely have been almost entirely burned up by the atmosphere had it been on a collision course with our planet.

However, it again highlights the importance of asteroid detection systems and that our planetary defenses need to be bolstered, in case more serious threats stray into Earth’s path in the future.

A stark example of this is the undetected Chelyabinsk meteor which exploded above Russia in February 2013. The comet was just 18 meters in diameter, but was still sizable enough to cause significant localized damage including blowing out thousands of windows.

Another example came in December 2018 when an undetected asteroid that was 10 times more powerful than the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki broke apart over the Bering Sea.

NASA warns of upcoming close shave with asteroid as doomsday preacher predicts ‘apocalyptic fireball’ #Asteroid #Fireball #NASA

asteroid-alert

Two asteroids are set to dart past Earth in the coming days, while NASA has warned about an impending close shave with an airplane-sized space rock. A doomsday preacher has also issued a dire warning about the upcoming encounter.

Greatly enhanced detection techniques have allowed astronomers to witness an ever-increasing number of asteroid flybys in recent years. The latest installment will see two space rocks skim past Earth this week. Both of the rocks were only spotted in recent days, a reminder of the threat that undetected asteroids potentially pose to our planet.

Thankfully, both of the rocks will pass at a safe distance of more than 1.5 million kilometers (932,056 miles). However, on September 1 we’re set for a far closer encounter, when a 28-meter space rock, officially known as 2011 ES4, will skim past Earth at only one third of the distance between our planet and the moon.

The visitor will whizz by at a speed of nearly 30,000 kilometers (18,600 miles) per hour. NASA has labelled it a “Potentially Hazardous Asteroid” because of possible risk it poses to our Earth.

While 2011 ES4 will almost certainly fly past our planet at a safe distance, Pastor Paul Begley has issued dire warnings about it heralding the end of the world.

“It’s been confirmed, incoming fireballs, apocalyptic, headed in our direction,” the self-proclaimed End Times prophesier forecast in a recent video on his popular YouTube account.

Begley cites biblical passages mixed with cherry-picked scientific evidence as “proof” that the planet is in mortal danger from incoming “apocalyptic fireballs”.

I’ve been talking about this for a decade because we knew, according to the Bible, we knew it was coming – even without scientific proof,” he explained. “Even Stephen Hawking says the Earth will be consumed in fire in 2600. I think it’s gonna be way way sooner than that because the Bible says it in second Peter, chapter three.”

Begley claimed that “more than 100 tonnes of space dust and rock” will rain down into our atmosphere every day in a sign of the impending apocalypse. Unsurprisingly, there is no scientific basis for these claims.

Four massive asteroids en route to Earth, as scientists discover space rocks of INTERSTELLAR origin in our solar system #Asteroids #Earth #NASA

asteroid-alert

As NASA reports that five more asteroids are headed our way this week, four of which are over 50 meters in diameter, research from Brazil has identified some 19 space rocks of interstellar origin in our solar system.

Scientists at Sao Paulo State University’s Institute of Geosciences and Exact Sciences have identified asteroids formed in another solar system in the galaxy, and classified them as Centaurs.

These 19 ‘alien’ asteroids are located between the orbits of Jupiter and Neptune, and were spotted thanks to their unusual path around our solar system, according to one of the study’s lead authors, Maria Helena Moreira Morais.

As an example, Morais and her team highlighted asteroid 514107 Ka’epaoka’awela, which is Hawaiian for “mischievous opposite-moving companion of Jupiter.”

The space rock’s orbit corresponds to that of Jupiter, but it revolves around the sun in the opposite direction. The researchers then used a computer simulation they say “works like a time machine” tracing its trajectory backwards by 4.5 billion years to far beyond the edges of our solar system.

“When we identified it as an object that came from outside the solar system, we didn’t know whether it was an isolated case or part of a vast population of immigrant asteroids,” Morais said. “In this latest study, we recognized 19 Centaurs of interstellar origin.”

All planets and asteroids from our solar system come from a thin disk of gas and dust that once orbited the sun. When the disk broke up, everything expanded outwards along a plane, so any outsiders would likely have missed the memo and would therefore be relatively easy to spot, given their unusual orbits.

“Our simulation showed that, 4.5 billion years ago, these objects revolved around the sun in orbits perpendicular to the disk’s plane. In addition, they did so in a region distant from the gravitational effects of the original disk,” Morais said.

These kinds of studies examine “the importance of interstellar matter to the chemical enrichment of the solar system,” and might help us find new sources of elements that are running out here on Earth, such as helium.

Meanwhile, closer to home, the Earth will be buzzed by no fewer than five more local asteroids this week, ranging in diameter from a paltry 15 meters to a whopping 120 meters – or roughly twice the height of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.

Thankfully, all but one will pass us at a safe distance of between 3.3 million kilometers and 7.1 million kilometers. However, just to keep us on our toes, on Wednesday, a 15-meter asteroid will shoot past at a distance of around 782,000 kilometers.

#Asteroid warning: Space rock 3 times size of VW Beetle hurtling towards #Earth for #NewYear

asteroid

AN ASTEROID is hurtling towards Earth for the New Year as NASA kicks off 2020 with an astronomical threat.

A space rock bigger than four African Bush Elephants – the largest of the elephants – is shooting towards Earth, with it set to arrive while 2020 is still fresh. The asteroid, which has a diameter of 13 metres, has been dubbed 2019 AE3 and it is making its way through the solar system at a staggering 8.2 kilometres per second (5MPS), or 29,520 kilometres per hour. At that speed, the asteroid would be able to make it from London to New York in around six minutes.

For reference, the Lockheed SR-71 Blackbird, the fastest jet ever built, could not even reach New York from London in an hour.

Asteroid AE3 will be at its closest to Earth on January 2 when it is just 0.013 AU (astronomical unit) away from our planet.

One AU is the distance between the Earth and the Sun (149,598,000 km), so AE3 will be just 19,44,772 kilometres from Earth.

While this may seem like a sizeable distance, it is close enough for NASA to sit up and take notice.

The US-based space agency have classed 2019 AE3 as a Near Earth Object (NEO) and allow the space agency to study the history of our solar system.

NASA set on its Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) website: “NEOs are comets and asteroids that have been nudged by the gravitational attraction of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter the Earth’s neighbourhood.

“The scientific interest in comets and asteroids is due largely to their status as the relatively unchanged remnant debris from the solar system formation process some 4.6 billion years ago.

“The giant outer planets (Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune) formed from an agglomeration of billions of comets and the left over bits and pieces from this formation process are the comets we see today.

“Likewise, today’s asteroids are the bits and pieces left over from the initial agglomeration of the inner planets that include Mercury, Venus, Earth, and Mars.”

While this specific asteroid poses no threat to Earth, NASA experts have warned there is a “100 percent” chance an asteroid will hit our world.

Greg Leonard, a senior research specialist at Catalina Sky Survey – a NASA funded project supported by the Near Earth Object Observation Program (NEOO) – told Bryan Walsh for the latter’s new book End Times: “I know the chances of me dying in an asteroid impact is less than dying from a lightning strike.

“But I also know that if we do nothing, sooner or later, there’s a one hundred percent chance that one will get us. So I feel privileged to be doing something.”

NASA is currently tracking three near-Earth objects (NEOs) due to fly past the Earth on November 20. Worryingly, two of the three were only spotted this past weekend, once again raising tensions over planetary defense.

The first of Wednesday’s cosmic flybys and the largest, measuring 157.5ft to 360.8ft (48 to 110 meters) across, will be asteroid 2019 UK6, which will speed past at approximately 6.20am GMT (1.20am EDT). It is 2019 UK6 we had most prior warning about, as it was first observed on October 24.

NEO 2019 UK6 is an Amor asteroid, which that goes around the Sun and the Earth, occasionally, but very rarely, crossing Earth’s path. Apollo asteroids, on the other hand, intersect with Earth’s orbit as the planet travels around the Sun.

The second of the Wednesday’s flybys will be 2019 WF, first spotted by NASA’s asteroid hunters just two days ago on November 17. Estimated to be about 24 meters wide, it will make its closest Earth approach at roughly twice the distance to the moon, so no danger of an extinction level event there anyway.

Last up will be 2019 WE, also spotted at the last second on November 17. This asteroid will sail past our planet at a distance of about 1.3 million kilometers away.

According to NASA’s Center for Near-Earth Object Studies (CNEOS), all three will have what are dubbed “near-Earth approaches,” but thankfully none are believed to pose any threat.
