100,000 poultry killed due to bird flu in Vietnam
Vietnam has culled more 100,000 poultry so far this year in a bid to contain the spread of bird flu in the Southeast Asian country, the government said on Monday.
The country has reported outbreaks of the highly pathogenic H5N1 and H5N6 bird flu strains in 14 provinces, the government said in a statement on its website.
“The risk for the outbreaks to spread on a larger scale is very high,” the statement said.
Vietnam has a poultry flock of around 460 million birds, and small-scale bird flu outbreaks have occurred sporadically in the country during the past few years.

China reports 1st human H5N6 avian influenza, bird flu case of 2021
One new case of human infection with avian influenza A(H5N6) virus was reported in China during the first week of the 2021.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the case was a 51-year-old male farmer from Yongchuan, Chongqing, China who had exposure to domestic poultry prior to the onset of illness. He developed symptoms on 18 December 2020, was admitted to hospital on 28 December for severe pneumonia and was reportedly in critical condition at time of report.
In 2020 there were two cases reported from China , one in Jiangsu Province and one in Hunan province, and this case is the first case reported from China in 2021.
To date, a total of 27 laboratory-confirmed cases of human infection with influenza A(H5N6) virus have been reported to WHO from China since 2014.

38,701 chickens killed due to Bird Flu in Philippines #BirdFlu #Chickens #Philippines
The Department of Agriculture’s (DA) Bureau of Animal Industry has detected the presence of the highly infectious H5N6 subtype of the influenza A virus in an egg-producing farm in San Luis town in Pampanga province.
Upon confirming the report, a team of veterinarians and animal health officers had immediately implemented emergency control measures, culling 38,701 poultry and disposing of the carcasses, the DA said in a statement.
In March, the DA detected an avian flu outbreak involving the same virus in a quail farm in Jaen municipality in Nueva Ecija province, where about 1,500 quails had died and some 12,000 others had been culled.
Initial investigation by the DA showed the presence in San Luis town of migratory birds, which has been associated with bird flu outbreaks in many countries, including the Philippines.
The DA said broilers, the primary source of poultry meat, were not affected by the latest outbreak.

The Philippines has detected an outbreak of avian flu in a northern province after tests showed presence of the highly infectious H5N6 subtype of the influenza A virus in a quail farm, the country’s farm minister said on Monday.
Agriculture Secretary William Dar said the bird flu virus, the same strain that hit some local poultry farms in 2017, was detected in Jaen municipality in Nueva Ecija province, where about 1,500 quails had died on one farm alone.
A total of 12,000 quails have been destroyed and buried to prevent further infections, Dar said, citing field reports.
“We are on top of the situation,” he said. “Surveillance around the 1-km and 7-km radius will be carried out immediately to ensure that the disease has not progressed around the said perimeter.”
Animal quarantine checkpoints have also been set up to restrict the movement of all live domestic birds to and from the quarantine area, he said.

137,180 birds killed due to bird flu in Vietnam #Birds #BirdFlu #Vietnam
Vietnam has so far this year culled 137,180 birds to contain the spreading of bird flu outbreaks, the government said on Thursday.
The outbreaks, including 38 outbreaks of H5N6 and five outbreaks of H5N1, have been detected in 13 out of Vietnam’s 63 provinces this year, the government said in a statement.
All of the bird flu outbreaks have happened at farms where the birds have not been vaccinated, it said, adding that, in several provinces, only 10%-20% of the birds were vaccinated.
Vietnam has a poultry flock of 460 million, and small-sized bird flu outbreaks have not been uncommon in the country during the past five years.

More than 100,000 poultry have been culled in 10 provinces and cities of Vietnam where A/H5N6 and A/H5N1 bird flu broke out, Vietnam News Agency cited the country’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development as reporting on Wednesday.
The Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that between early January and Feb. 24, Vietnam had 34 bird flu outbreaks with over 100,000 poultry culled, among which 29 were A/H5N6 and the rest five were A/H5N1 in 10 provinces and cities of Hanoi, Bac Ninh, Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Tra Vinh, Thai Binh, Binh Duong, Ninh Binh, Hai Phong and Quang Ninh. Among them, Quang Ninh has passed the required period of 21 days since the last infections and been declared clear of the outbreak.

Vietnam’s southern Ba Ria Vung Tau province has seen first outbreaks of A/H5N6 bird flu which have led to the culling of 10,500 chickens, local media reported on Tuesday.
The outbreaks were spotted in two communes in Xuyen Moc district on July 31 and Aug. 1, and then tests confirmed that some chickens were infected with the bird flu virus, Vietnam News Agency quoted the provincial Department of Livestock and Animal Health as reporting.
Relevant local agencies have culled 10,500 chickens raised by two households in the two communes, disinfected surrounding areas and intensified vaccination among fowls in the district.
In late July, the Vietnamese Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development said that the outbreaks of A/H5N6 and A/H5N1 bird flu had been reported in 13 communes of 11 localities from the start of 2019, leading to the culling of more than 23,000 poultry.
The bird flu is forecast to widely spread in the remaining months of this year due to changing weather and surging poultry transportation in time ahead of the lunar new year holiday.
Vietnam first detected bird flu virus strain of A/H5N1 in December 2003 on both humans and fowls. More than 45 million poultry in Vietnam were culled between 2003 and 2006. Since then, hundreds of thousands of fowls have been killed each year.
In the 2004-2014 period, 127 people in Vietnam were infected with H5N1, including 64 fatalities, according to the ministry. The country has detected no new human cases of H5N1 infection since 2014.

11,000+ #birds killed due to BirdFlu in #Xinjiang, #China
China has confirmed an outbreak of highly pathogenic H5N6 bird flu in Horgos in the far western Xinjiang region.
The outbreak killed 1,015 out of 2,545 birds raised by farmers in Horgos, according to a notice on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs late on Friday.
Authorities culled 11,910 birds in the area to control the spread of the disease. The notice did not specify the type of poultry involved.
China is the world’s No.2 poultry consumer. It has reported several outbreaks of highly pathogenic bird flu in recent months.

Also in Dak To district, through inspection at the Centralized Slaughtering Center of the district, the Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Station of this district discovered eight porkers of the Purchasing Center waiting for slaughtering infected with FMD. Although these pigs have been recorded and destroyed, people in Dak To town are worried that this is one of the causes of FMD outbreaks in the area because at present, the Cattle Slaughter Center of the district Dak To is a place to supply pork for most people in the town and surrounding communes.

32,352 birds killed due to bird flu in Guizhou province, China
China has reported a case of H5N6 avian bird flu on a poultry farm in southwestern Guizhou province, the nation’s agriculture ministry said on Saturday.
Local authorities culled 32,352 birds at the farm following the outbreak, according to a statement published on the website of the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
