Just under 2,000 people in northern and central Bergen County were without power after an explosion at a PSE&G substation in Waldwick on Sunday morning, according to the utility.

Several area fire departments and mutual aid units were dispatched to the scene of the PSE&G substation at Hopper Avenue at about 10:40 a.m.

Authorities evacuated residents on Bohnert Place following the explosion, and several families are now staying at the borough ambulance core building, said Waldwick Mayor Tom Giordano, who is also president of the fire department.

Giordano said that the Garfield fire department was dosing the fire with foam and officials expected it to be extinguished within several hours.

There were areas in Westwood, Hillsdale and Woodcliff Lake without power, said Karen Vossen, a PSE&G spokeswoman. She said electricity was expected to be restored to them from sometime between 12:30 to 1:30 p.m.

There were no injuries, according to the mayor, and he said the fumes from the fire do not pose any danger to nearby residents.

Waldwick police declined to comment.

The incident is under investigation, Vossen added.

Chemical explosion at a factory kills 4 in South Korea

Chemical Explosion Alert

An explosion at a chemical factory in the South Korean port city of Ulsan has killed four people, an official at the city’s fire department has told CNN. Two people remain missing following the incident.

Fire department officials initially heard the blast at the Hanwha Chemical plant and were trying to determine its location when the emergency call came in.

Initial indications suggest the explosion, which occurred at around 9 a.m. local time Friday,  was caused while workers were welding the interior of a waste water storage facility. The blast tore out the upper structure of the storage facility, which subsequently collapsed.

Almost 30 emergency vehicles were dispatched to the scene, along with around 220 emergency workers, government officials, police and military personnel.

One other person was injured in the explosion and taken to the hospital. The investigation into the cause of the accident continues.

Two Dead, One Missing In Greece After Island Flood
Flood Alert

Two women died on the Greek tourist island of Rhodes and a man was missing after heavy rainfall hit the area, the fire department said on Saturday.

The 27-year-old woman’s body was found in the sea Saturday near the town of Kremasti, one of the areas hardest hit by the intense three-hour downpour, a fire department spokeswoman said.

A day earlier, rescue crews had recovered the body of a 40-year-old woman from a river bank.

“We are still looking for a 50-year-old man,” the spokeswoman said.

“A Super Puma helicopter with a 10-man specialised rescue team and dogs has been sent to Rhodes to assist the search,” she added.

The fire department said it rescued another 20 people trapped in their homes or cars.

After about three hours of heavy rain in the early evening, weather conditions improved late on Friday.

Parts of the island have been declared in a state of emergency.

The state-run Athens News Agency reported that parts of the island suffered temporary power cuts and that local roads appear to have been damaged.

According to local media, the fire department received some 140 calls for help.
