3000 TONS of fish have died in a lake in Castanhao, Brazil

Fish Kill Alert

The Açude Castanhão farmers, located in the region of the Jaguaribe, the 307 km from Fortaleza, asking the State Government to take action to minimize the damage caused by the mass mortality of tilapias. In the last 20 days, about 3 thousand tons of fish turned up dead in the dam, according to estimates the city of Jaguaribara is a town and municipality near the reservoir.

During the meeting made yesterday (30), was created a Commission, between fish farmers and representatives of the State Government and City Hall to raise demands and propose actions. According to the Mayor of Jaguaribara, Francini Guedes, the group must finish the work by Friday (3). The result will be presented next week to the Governor Camilo Santana.

Among the professionals who face the loss of death of tilapias, are the fish farmers of the cooperative of producers of Curupati-Fish (CPCP). Formed by 41 producers, CPCP produced 45 tonnes of fish per month. Each computerised supports had an income of r $ 1.5 mil. Jose Rizoneudo Fernandes da Silva, one of the partners, says were lost 215 tons of fish, corresponding to 95% of the current production of the cooperative. “The moment is difficult for us. We all have debts with banks and to start over, we need money. If we can we will have resources a year to return to production. “

Pardon the debts of farmers is one of the demands that the Commission intends to take the Governor of Ceará. Second Francini Guedes, the creation of tilapias in cages employs about 2 million people gathered in cooperatives, associations and self-employed workers. The total output of fish per month revolved around 1.5 thousand tons. “The fish began to grow in the city and came well, but with this disaster do not know how will be the future of the city. We need to put the producers back to the activity, but we have no conditions because they do not have to buy fries. “

The company of management of water resources (Cogerh), which manages the Açude Castanhão in conjunction with the National Department of works Against drought (Dnocs), is analyzing the cause of high fish kills. The fish farmers attribute the fact the opening followed by sudden closure of dispersing the tank valve. This string can be generated a wave that brought toxic material deposited on the bottom of the pond.

In a statement, Cogerh contrary to the thesis fish farmers, claims that this procedure has been done other times with no consequence. According to the company, the fish kills is associated with low concentration of oxygen in the water, which mainly affects those kept in tanks.

“The fish kills is an event likely to occur in any reservoir, demanding constant attention creators to water parameters that vary during the year, demanding attention for the management in each period,” said José Rizoneudo.

The Mayor of Jaguaribara reports that one of the measures to be taken in the pond will be distributing the tilapias elsewhere in the reservoir, preventing the concentration of several cages in one place.

The Castanhão is considered by the largest public Weir Dnocs Brazil. The reservoir has a capacity of 6.7 billion cubic meters of water, but, currently, all with just 19.38% of its capacity. The dam is responsible for supplying the capital and in the metropolitan region of Fortaleza.

Fish kill occurring off the coast of Pasir Ris, Singapore

Fish Kill Alert

Amid higher plankton levels, some fish farmers off Pasir Ris have seen their fish die in recent days and the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority (AVA) is analysing samples to determine the cause of death.

The AVA said some fish deaths were reported by farmers in the East Johor Straits between Wednesday and Saturday. This came after the authority alerted the coastal fish farmers to elevated plankton levels in the area last Monday and Tuesday for them to take precautions.

Plankton are microorganisms and plankton bloom occurs when one species of the drifting marine organisms predominates over others and multiplies quickly, said the AVA. This can be triggered by unpredictable weather, a higher concentration of nutrients in the seawater and poor water exchange between the high and low tides, a spokesperson said.

The AVA did not provide an indication of the scale of deaths so far, but said it has been visiting the coastal fish farms since the farmers’ reports. The visits are to “ascertain the situation, offer advice to the farmers to mitigate the situation and collect fish samples from the affected farms for analysis on the cause of mortality”.

It will continue to monitor and work closely with the farmers, an AVA spokesperson added.

Blogger and environmentalist Ria Tan reported seeing dead fish, both wild and farmed, at Pasir Ris on Saturday. In a post on her Wild Shores website on Sunday, Ms Tan noted that some algal blooms are harmful and said it was important to find out the exact cause of fish deaths this time.

The latest deaths occurred a year after farmers lost more than 160 tonnes of fish and suffered individual losses of up to several hundred thousand dollars.

Last year’s episode was due to plankton bloom and low levels of dissolved oxygen, said the AVA, which offered an assistance package to affected farmers.

Thousands of fish ‘die suddenly’ in Sragen Regency, Indonesia

Doc. Timlo.net/Agung

Thousands of fish cages owned by farmers in Kedung Ombo (WKO) Ngargotirto Village, District Sumberlawang, Sragen again died suddenly. Earlier in September 2014 and it had occurred sudden fish death. It is not certain because the fish was dead, but provisional estimates due to lack of oxygen.

Village Head Ngargotirto, Sumberlawang, Daryono revealed, dozens of tons of fish belonging to farmers in a village hamlet Ngargotirto died suddenly that most types of tilapia and tombro. While catfish can still survive. As a result of these events is estimated tens of fish farmers lose hundreds of millions of dollars.

“My neighbor who had cages in WKO already told me, but so far there has been no detailed reports. I also have not had time to check the field, “he said, Tuesday (2/12).

Daryono tell from the recognition of a fish farmer, conditions WKO fetid water before the fish died. He said the fish farmers spread in several hamlets, including Hamlet Ngasinan, Canyons Gandul, Spring Bulus, Ngargorejo and Kowang. However, the number of fish farmers most in Hamlet Ngasinan.

While the Head of Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Sragen, Agus Purwanto, claimed to have received a report related to the death of fish in WKO. He claims to have issued a circular (SE) to the fish farmers to immediately harvest of large fish.

Agus explained death of fish in WKO events regularly occur in August and December. The cause is suspected because of the lack of availability of oxygen in the waters.

“It’s also because of the very cold temperature changes. Usually these fish die midnight. Occurs vertical vortex of water that raised the mud at the bottom of the reservoir to the surface of the water, so that the oxygen depleted, “said Agus.

Hundreds of thousands of fish die suddenly in fish farms in Solo, Central Java, Indonesia

Fish Kill Alert

Rain twice in two days in the Gajah Mungkur Solo, Central Java, a catastrophe for farmers fish cages. Hundreds of thousands of fish farming cages died suddenly. Death is due to the supply of oxygen in the water content is not adequate, and also mixing the water with sand.

Fajri, one farmer floating fish cages Gajah Mungkur to Media Indonesia said it is feared the death of the fish will continue, because the rain is believed to still be carrying mud and sand. It’s given the volume of water in the reservoir has not been adequate.

“The rain will come in the next few days, we fear will still add to the number of tilapia and catfish die. Because water reservoir volume shrinkage is still remarkable, and far short of expectations. But we have to admit, this is an annual cycle of any change of seasons or transition, “he added, Wednesday (11/12/2014).

So far, according to Sardi, other cage fish farmers in WGM, there is no alternative solution to anticipate the current fishing mortality transition season. And losses arising from the death of catfish and tilapia in floating cages WGM each year, could reach billions of dollars.

What is clear, WGM floating cage fish farming can only be normal again after the elevation of water reservoirs are in the normal position. Throughout still shrinkage, and was in critical condition such as this, the number of dead fish every day they reach one to two tons.

“Farmers fish cages have experienced huge losses due to the impact of this change of seasons in 1995, in which the number of dead fish reached 100 tonnes,” said Fajri.

Hundreds of TONNES of fish have died due to virus in West Java, Indonesia

Fish Kill Alert

Pembubidadaya fish floating net (KJA) Jatiluhur, Purwakarta, West Java, panic-stricken. Because, lately attack koi herpes virus (KHV) began raged. As a result of the virus attack, carrying 217 tons of dead fish.

In anticipation of greater losses, farmers are forced to harvest early. Chairman of the Association of Farmers and Fishermen Fish (Hipni) Jatiluhur, Dervish, say, along the pond in 2014 Jatiluhur have several times attacked by the virus. The most severe at the end of last October until now. As a result of the virus, dead fish one by one.

“The fish are dead since the end of October to date has reached 217 tons,” said the Dervish, Monday (3/11).

Disclosed, the potential death of these fish, big enough. Given that, until now the fish farmers can not break the chain of the virus. Thus, of the loss is too great to bear, it’s better early crop farmers.

However, he continued, the impact of this early harvest, production declined 20 percent. Dervish

He explained that, when normal conditions, in a population of fish cages reached 10 thousand heads, when the harvest could produce 1.5 ton.Namun, with early harvest, the results obtained by the farmers only 80 percent. “So, farmers lose the fish reaches 20 percent due to the herpes virus attacks,” he added.

Worse yet, he continued, the price of fish is currently falling. In the market, carp price is only Rp 14 thousand. Ideally, more than Rp 16 thousand per kilogram.

The cause of this herpes virus, Dervish suspect, due to extreme weather. Hot weather like today, thought to be the trigger for this virus thrives. Thus, the virus that has no cure is to freely attack the goldfish is being cultivated.

Head of the Department of Animal Husbandry and Fisheries Purwakarta Herawan Herrera, admitted, fish herpes virus was still safe for consumption. Thus, the virus will not attack humans. By doing so, it appealed to people not to negative view of the case against the herpes virus attacks the fish in Jatiluhur.

MASSIVE die off of fish in 44 fish farms due to disease along the coast of Singapore

Fish Kill Alert

A type of marine bacteria, Vibrio, has been detected in fish samples taken from Singapore’s coastal fish farms.

While Vibrio is found naturally in tropical marine environments, humans can get infected by consuming undercooked seafood or exposing an open wound to sea water. Diarrhoea, vomiting and fever are some symptoms of the infection.

Experts say warm weather and rising sea surface temperatures have led to the rapid growth of marine micro-organisms, which release toxins that kill the fish. A large number of fish in 44 farms have died due to the infection, causing frustration among fish farmers.

Singapore Marine Aquaculture Cooperative Chairman Phillip Lim said two farms in Lim Chu Kang lost about 60 tonnes of fish to Vibrio, and his own farm has also been affected. “I started with 8,000 fish. I’m only left with 200 to 300-plus fish,” he said. The infection was discovered when they sent samples to the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore for examination.

“For us, as farmers, we don’t have the equipment, so we need more professional help on that, to advise us what to do about all this. Because Vibrio can also infect humans, so it is quite dangerous.” Mr Lim said stress might have killed the fish as well.

While dead fish are disposed of, those still alive are sold at local markets. The public is urged to ensure the fish is fully cooked, before consuming them.
