Major landslide strikes again; Five washed away in the heavy rain in Uttarakhand, India

Five people including two children were killed on Monday in rain-related incidents in Uttarakhand which received light to medium rainfall in its various parts, resulting in landslides that also obstructed national highways in the hill state.

Four persons including two children and a woman were washed away while crossing a seasonal drain in Rishikesh, police said.

The incident took place in afternoon at Rani Pokhri area, when the four persons were crossing the drain, but were swept away in the stream, after the water level in it suddenly rose, police said.

One of the victims has been identified as Mahendra Singh, 75, a resident of Bhogpur village.

In a separate incident, a 19-year-old youth was washed away in an overflowing drain in Pratapnagar tehsil in Tehri district, police said.

The victim has been identified as Gaurav Singh Panwar, a resident of Kholgadh village, according to the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority.

The rain on Monday also obstructed vehicular traffic on several roads including national highways on the Char Dham routes in the state.

According to Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority, there were reports of light to medium rain in parts of the state including in capital Dehradun.

In last 24 hours, Dehradun received 46 mm of rain, Bageshwar 40.5 mm, Nainital 30 mm, Champawat 28 mm, Rishikesh 24 mm, Kichcha 22 mm and Haldwani registered 21 mm.

The roadways affected due to landslides include Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway, which is obstructed in Chamoli district. Rishikesh-Gangotri National Highway is
obstructed due to landslides at Netala, Malla, Laldang and Sukhitap, while Rishikesh-Yamunotri National Highway is obstructed at Silaiband due to debris, the Uttarakhand State Disaster Management Authority said.

A team of Border Road Organisation (BRO) is clearing away the debris to restore traffic on the roads.

Five people were killed in a landslide in Uttarakhand and the meteorological department Monday warned of another round of incessant downpour within 48 hours. Heavy rain pounded the state 10 days back. Officials have been asked to be “extra vigilant” in areas adjacent to rivers, many of which are in spate owing to the heavy rain that lashed the state July 16-17. Three more killed in landslides, toll now 5, India

In less than a week, the toll in landslide-related incidents rose to five in the Uttarakhand hill districts with two fresh casualties reported late Wednesday in Chamoli district. 
 
Executive director Puish Rautela of the Uttarakhand Disaster Management Response Centre (UDMC) said that three people, including a 50-year-old woman, Janki Devi, died in a landslide on Sunday near Sonprayag on the Rudraprayag-Kedarnath national highway, in Rudrapryag district. 
 
Two men Ganesh Prasad (38) and Puran Singh (45) were killed late Wednesday around 11.30 pm as a huge rock, triggered by heavy rain, came crashing on a state government-owned bus at Bajpur. 
 
A senior officer in the disaster management department said 38 connecting roads including Rishikesh-Badrinath, Rishikesh-Kedarnath, Rishikesh-Gangotri and Yamnotri, were found blocked because of fresh landslides. The total number of blocked roads rose to 206 from 168 in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Pauri, Kedarnath and Tehri districts. 
 
Chief Minister Harish Rawat told TOI that he has asked DMs and divisional commissioners in Garhwal and Kumaon divisions to ensure that all those who are stuck at different places are supplied meals and other essential commodities regularly.
