Thousands of marine animal strandings and deaths ‘surprise researchers’ in Santa Catarina, Brazil

The first Monitoring project balance of beaches of Santos basin, Petrobras funded and coordinated by Univali, Itajaí, brought up a number of strandings and deaths of marine animals far superior to what was expected by experts.

In September and October were 1700 records in the 354-kilometer stretch between Itapoá, Upstate, and Laguna, in the South. Most puppies have arrived dead to the beaches.

The project is unprecedented and is part of the environmental restrictions established by Ibama to release new oil explorations in the Santos basin. For the first time, the beaches of the coast of Santa Catarina, Paraná and São Paulo are inspected daily by researchers, who will have the mission to establish the impact of the activity of production and oil exploration to marine life.

Live animals are rescued and re-entered in nature. The dead pass through the assessment of carcasses. The report of the leading causes of death will be disclosed when the project complete six months.

So far, the penguins lead the statistics of stranding. But have also been found whales, dolphins and seals, as the photo, which appeared in Bombinhas. The trend is that, in the coming months, have superior numbers replaced by turtles, more found on beaches during the summer.
