Hundreds of fish have died over the last two days in the lotus pond on the Bal Bhavan premises in Cubbon Park. Morning walkers on Thursday were shocked to see fish floating in the pond.

Although Deputy Director (Cubbon Park) Mahantesh Murgod attributed the fish kill to depletion of dissolved oxygen levels in the pond, S. Umesh, president of the Cubbon Park Walkers’ Association, claimed inflow of sewage and effluents (petrol and diesel) from vehicles parked near the Bal Bhavan into the pond as the reason for it.

Mr. Umesh said fuel from vehicles parked near the Bal Bhavan gets spilled on the road and enters the pond along with rainwater. This contaminates the pond water, resulting in fish kill, he said. Mr. Murgod, however, said low dissolved oxygen level was a common phenomenon during the first summer showers.

“We noticed dead fish floating in the pond on Tuesday. More than 700 dead fish had been removed and buried. The pond has been cleaned,” he said.
