Record-Size Hail Bombards Northern California, USA

Hail Alert

Three-inch diameter hail stones fell during a thunderstorm Saturday near Red Bluff. The chunks of ice tied California’s largest hail on record.

Some of the largest hail ever recorded in California — measuring 3 inches in diameter — plummeted from sky near Red Bluff over the weekend, National Weather Service officials said.

The spike-ball-shaped hailstones came down around 3:15 p.m. amid a severe thunderstorm on Saturday, 7 miles south-southwest of Red Bluff (Tehama County).

The massive and dangerous-looking balls of ice tied California’s previous record-size hail set back in 1960 in San Diego County, the weather service said.

But Saturday’s impressive hail pales in comparison to the softball-to-volleyball-sized chunks that bombarded Vivian, S.D. in 2010.

One of those stones had partially melted, but still came in at 8 inches in diameter and weighed nearly 2 lbs. — the largest ever measured in the United States, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Two women are in hospital after falls during a wild Australia Day eve hailstorm which battered Canberra.

The ACT State Emergency Service received 423 calls after heavy rain and hail struck the capital on Monday night.

It completed 200 jobs before crews stood down after midnight, with ACT Fire and Rescue continuing to assess damage throughout Tuesday morning.

Severe Turbulence Strikes An American Airlines Plane

Turbulence Alert

Seven people were taken to hospital after an American Airlines plane from Miami to Milan made an emergency landing in Newfoundland after the jet briefly encountered severe turbulence.

The aircraft landed safely in the East Coast Canadian province late Sunday, where it was met by paramedics.

American Airlines spokesman Ross Feinstein said three flight attendants and four passengers were transported to hospital for further evaluation. He said he didn’t think any of the injuries were life threatening.

The seat belt light was on when the Boeing 767 carrying 192 passengers and 11 crew members encountered turbulence.

At least four ambulances and a fire truck were seen on the tarmac in St. John’s, Newfoundland. Paramedics rushed toward the plane with stretchers and what appeared to be a backboard.

An hour after the plane landed, one ambulance remained.

Feinstein said they are working on next steps to get the uninjured passengers to Milan.

Sara Norris, a spokeswoman for St. John’s airport, said the plane will stay in St. John’s overnight.
