Massive 7.1 Quake Causes Major Power Outages To Thousands Of Homes In Alaska

Power Outages Alert

A 7.1 earthquake hit southwest of Anchorage, Alaska, on Sunday early in the morning sending about 30 aftershocks, according to seismologists. Power companies said that thousands were left without power.

The quake struck at about 1:30 am local time about 280 kilometers (162 miles) southwest of Alaska’s biggest city, Anchorage, according the US Geological Survey. The epicenter of the quake was located 124.8 kilometers deep. According to residents tremors were felt in Anchorage.

The Alaska Earthquake Center recorded some 30 aftershocks during the night with the strongest measured at 4.3.

There were no reports of injuries or severe property damage. Residents posted videos and photos of the quake and its aftermath on social media.

22 homes in Kenai area were evacuated following an apparent gas leak, the local KTUU TV channel reported citing police.

The quake also caused “several outages including our entire Douglass substation in Willow and Hospital substation impacting portions of Palmer and Wasilla,” the Matanuska Electric Association (MEA) said in a statement.

Thousands of people lost power in the area. The MEA said that about 4,900 customers were left without power in the early hours of the morning. Another power utility, the Chugach Electric Association, said that about 4,600 customers were affected by outages. Municipal Light & Power reported an outage in Downtown Anchorage affecting 159 customers.

Severe flooding and landslides strikes Indonesia

Severe Flood Warning

Landslide Danger Alert

At least five people have died, one is missing and thousands have been affected by landslides and floods after heavy rain hit 14 regions in Indonesia for the past four days, an official says.

A spokesperson for the National Disaster Mitigation Agency said that thousands of homes were affected by the floods, and hundreds of others are threatened by imminent landslides.

“There are 63.7 million people in Indonesia that live in flood-prone areas while 40.9 million others live in areas highly vulnerable to landslide. We need to mitigate them from being hit by disasters,” he said.

The meteorological and climatology agency predicted that the rainy season in Indonesia will peak by the end of January or early February.

The prolonged El Nino global weather phenomenon has delayed the start of the rain season, and its high intensity has reduced precipitation in areas such as Java, Bali and both East and West Nusa Tenggara.

The rainy season will enter the neutral phase by March or April.

The spokesperson said the lowered precipitation has significantly reduced the number of landslides, floods and tornadoes across the country compared to average figures for January.

Omani man quarantined in Thailand with deadly MERS virus

MERS Virus Alert

An Omani man has been placed in quarantine in Thailand after testing positive for the potentially deadly Middle East Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) virus, Thai health ministry officials said on Sunday.

The 71-year-old man arrived in Bangkok on a flight from Oman on Friday night and was subsequently tested in two hospitals before being transferred to an infectious diseases specialist facility and isolated from other patients, Piyasakol Sakolsatayadorn, Thailand’s public health minister, said.

A relative who was travelling with him was also placed in quarantine.

The ministry is now trying to locate all persons still in Thailand who had contact with the patient, including 218 crew members and passengers on the flight from Oman, a taxi driver, a hotel employee and 30 hospital staff.

Of these, 36 individuals besides the patient’s relative are considered at high risk of contracting the disease due to close contact with him.

They include 23 passengers on the flight, the taxi driver and the hotel employee, as well as 11 hospital staff.

The patient had been treated at a hospital in Oman for a week for fever and a cough, Sakolsatayadorn said.

Thailand had confirmed its first case of MERS in June last year, when another elderly man from Oman tested positive.

He was treated at the infectious diseases institute for several weeks before being declared clear of the virus and allowed to leave Thailand.

Thailand is a common destination for so-called “health tourism,” and after the case last year the health ministry threatened some private hospitals with legal action following reports that they had sent Middle Eastern patients suspected of being infected with MERS to a government-run infectious disease centre in a taxi.

It warned that such transfers were against disease control protocols.

The government also introduced new measures for the estimated 10,000 Thai Muslims who undertook the Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca in September, including vaccinations for flu and yellow fever before their travels and monitoring for up to a month upon return.

MERS is an acute viral respiratory disease caused by a coronavirus, with symptoms including fever, cough, shortness of breath and often pneumonia.

More than two dozen countries have reported cases of MERS, including the US, Britain, France, Germany and South Korea, where an outbreak killed more than 35 people last year.

The virus had a fatality rate of more than 40 percent in Saudi Arabia where it was first discovered in 2012.

Mass evacuation alert: One of world’s most dangerous volcanoes threatens to blow

Volcano Alert

The Popocatépetl volcano is showing the signs of a possible eruption. People are ready to start to evacuate from the area.

The Mexican capital is the world’s fourth most populated city and home to 20 million people, while Peubla has more than 6 million people living there, and all could be at risk in both cites in the event of a catastrophic eruption.

The volcano alert follows fears earlier this month that a second large volcano in Mexico – the 3,850 metres-high Colima in western Mexico – could be about to face a large scale eruption for the first time in 100 years.

Popocatépetl last saw a major eruption in 2000, but early warnings saw 41,000 people evacuated in advance, averting a major disaster.
