New Landslide Prompts More Evacuations in Kfarnabrakh, Lebanon

Landslide Danger Alert

New landslides hit the outskirts of the town of Kfarnabrakh in the Chouf region and some residents were compelled to evacuate their homes, the state-run National News Agency said on Sunday.

A snowstorm accompanied by heavy rainfall hit the area leading to the collapse of major pathway that lies beneath the houses. The landslide blocked the Kfarnabrakh, Wadi al-Sitt and al-Fowara roads with soil and rocks, NNA added.

A similar incident took place late in November when panicked residents evacuated their homes after a similar landslide.

Residents took to Twitter to publish photos of the landslide.

Storm Vladimir hit Lebanon two days ago and seems to continue until today blanketing the high altitudes with snow.

The storm stranded hundreds of people in their vehicles, triggered landslides and blocked mountainous roads.

Strong explosion this morning at Momotombo volcano in Nicaragua

The cone of Momotombo volcano covered by glowing bombs from this morning’s eruption

A strong explosion occurred this morning at 04:22 local time at the volcano, covering much of the summit cone with incandescent ejecta.

The lava flow effusion and continuous strombolian activity had stopped in early December, followed by only high-temperature degassing, sporadic minor explosions and the growth of what might have been a small lava dome. A more intense phase of activity seems to have started yesterday. Early on 2 January, small ash emissions occurred, followed by more, still weak explosions in the early afternoon of yesterday.

The strong explosion this morning might have involved a small pyroclastic flow on the NE side of the volcano, reaching about 1.5-2 km length.

Whether or not this activity is sign of a new batch of magma arriving at the vent, and leading up to more intense activity to come, or result of more superficial processes, e.g. surface pressure released beneath the recently emplaced lava occupying the summit is unclear.

No damages were reported to have occurred from this morning’s explosion.

Severe storm warning with heavy rain could lead to flash flooding in central Victoria, Australia

Severe Thunderstorm Warning Alert

Authorities are warning of the possibility of flash flooding through parts of central Victoria, with heavy storms set to hit the area.

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has issued a severe storm alert, warning of large hailstones, damaging winds and heavy rainfall.

The weather bureau’s Richard Russell said the potential for heavy rainfall was of particular concern.

“These thunderstorms are quite large and slow moving, and with them being slow-moving, they tend to dump quite a bit of rainfall in a rather small area, so the potential for very heavy rainfall there which may lead to flash flooding,” he said.

Mr Russell said fire-affected areas would be particularly vulnerable and warned people to be alert to the potential for landslides and debris across roads.

“Heavy rainfall in these areas sometimes do contain debris, such as soil, ash, or burnt out trees, rocks,” he said.

“It can increase the potential for landslides in mountainous areas when we do get the combination of recently affected fire areas and heavy rainfall.”
