Plane crash kills all on board in Iran

Plane Crash Alert

AN Iranian police plane has crashed, killing all seven people aboard, including a top officer.

THE Turbo Commander craft crashed in the mountains outside of the southeastern provincial capital of Zahedan, with the wreckage found by searchers, official news agency IRNA reports.

The flight was carrying four passengers and three crew members.

Among those killed was General Mahmoud Sadeqi, a senior police officer in charge of investigations, IRNA said on Saturday.

It’s believed the plane took off from Tehran headed southeast to investigate an incident involving an attack on police.

Authorities offered no immediate explanation for the crash, though Iranian airlines, including those run by the state, are chronically strapped for cash, rely on aging planes and have a spotty maintenance record.

Mysterious, deadly virus lands in Oregon, USA

EV-D68 Virus Alert

Oregon has joined 46 other states in dealing with a mysterious and potentially fatal virus, the Oregon Health Authority announced Thursday. Four cases of Enterovirus D68 — three in Multnomah County — have been found in Oregon. All four are children and all four have recently been in hospital intensive care units.

The highly contagious virus has hit 678 people, most children, since mid-August, most in the Midwest, and is believed to have caused five deaths. According to Dr. Richard Leman, a public health physician with the Oregon Health Authority, Enterovirus D68 is attaining notoriety this year because previously testing for the specific virus was limited.

“We fully expect we have had cases in the past but we haven’t been able to test for it,” Leman says.

Enterovirus D68 causes breathing problems and is especially dangerous for children younger than 5 and children with asthma or other underlying lung conditions. Children and teens are believed to be especially susceptible because they do not yet have immunity from previous exposures to the collection of Enteroviruses.

According to the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Enterovirus D68 is one of more than 100 non-polio enteroviruses. The virus was first identified in California in 1962. It can cause mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms ranging from fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing and muscle aches to difficulty breathing.

Anyone with respiratory illness should contact their doctor if they are having difficulty breathing or if their symptoms are getting worse, according to the CDC. There is no EV-D68 vaccine.

There is no specific treatment for people with respiratory illness caused by EV-D68, according to the CDC. For mild respiratory illness, over-the-counter medications for pain and fever are recommended. Some people with severe respiratory illness may need to be hospitalized. There are no antiviral medications available for people who become infected with EV-D68.

CDC recommended safety measures, include:

• Wash hands often with soap and water for 20 seconds.

• Avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands.

• Avoid close contact such as kissing, hugging and sharing cups or eating utensils with people who are sick.

• Cover your coughs and sneezes with a tissue or shirt sleeve, not your hands.

• Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces, such as toys and doorknobs, especially if someone is sick.

• Stay home when you are sick.

Deadly Ebola Virus: Man Rushed To Hospital With Symptoms Of Deadly Virus In Brazil

Ebola Virus

Brazil is treating a 47-year-old man who has become the country’s first suspected case of the deadly Ebola virus.

The man, originally from Guinea in West Africa, has been placed into isolation at a hospital in the city of Cascavel, where Brazil’s ministry of health have sent specialists to provide additional help and care.

He arrived in Brazil on 19 September and is believed to have travelled from Guinea.

On Thursday afternoon the man went to the emergency department at the hospital with a fever. His case is being treated by medics as suspicious as his symptoms have developed within the maximum incubation period for Ebola, which is 21 days.

Brazil’s health officials said the man has not experienced any bleeding, vomiting or shown any other symptoms at this time, but he will be transferred to the National Institute of Infectious Diseases at the Evandro Chagas hospital in Rio de Janeiro, in accordance with security protocols in place for suspected cases of Ebola.

Health officials are now attempting to identify people who may have come into contact with the patient while displaying any symptoms, Brazilian newspaper O Globo reported.
Brazil’s ministry of health has reminded people that Ebola is transmitted through the contact with the blood, tissues or bodily fluids of sick individuals, or through the contact of contaminated objects or surfaces.

The country has joined Argentina and the US in tightening its port entry procedures for ships that have sailed from West Africa, in an attempt to contain the deadly virus, Reuters news agency reported.

Brazil’s health surveillance agency, Anvisa, said that any ships known to have docked in Ebola-affected countries within the last 21 days will need to provide thorough medical records and logs of medicines used before receiving clearance to dock at Brazilian ports.

Deadly Ebola Virus: Teen Rushed To Hospital With Symptoms Of Deadly Virus, Brooklyn, New York, USA

Ebola Virus

A 14-year-old Brooklyn boy was rushed to a hospital with Ebola-like symptoms Friday night, New York Daily News reported, citing officials. The 2014 Ebola outbreak has claimed 4, 033 lives out of 8, 399 documented cases in West Africa, while a U.S. Ebola patient died at a hospital in Dallas on Wednesday.

The teenager with high fever was brought to Brookdale Hospital after he fell unconscious, officials told the Daily News. The teenager reportedly fell ill during his two-week trip to the Sudan in North Africa. The boy was quarantined by the hospital staff and doctors were testing him to determine whether he had Ebola. Health officials were also reportedly determining if the teen’s relatives should be quarantined, sources told the Daily News.

“They’re not letting anyone come near him,” a law enforcement source told the paper.

The New York Police Department is also trying to find out the exact date on which the boy flew back into the country and how many people had been in physical contact with him since then. The teen has not officially been diagnosed with Ebola.

“Results for Ebola tests do not have an instantaneous turnaround,” a spokeswoman for the city’s Office of Emergency Management said.

The news comes as the first person to die from Ebola in the U.S. was cremated. The family of Thomas Duncan released medical records which revealed that after his initial visit to hospital, he had only been given a prescription for antibiotics and was sent home. Authorities were informed that he had recently returned from Liberia — the worst affected country in West Africa. He was subsequently diagnosed with Ebola in late September. The hospital where Duncan was treated, Texas Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, has come under fire for its handling of his case.

Landslide kills 19 at construction site in China

Landslide Alert

A landslide buried a camp for workers at a construction site in northwestern China on late Friday, killing nineteen construction workers and injuring two others, state-run media reported on Saturday. No one else is believed to remain trapped under the rubble.

The incident happened at about 9:12 p.m. local time when a landslide came down from a mountain and buried eight make-shift houses at a camp for workers at a construction site in Yan’an, a city in the Shanbei region of Shaanxi province. A total of 21 construction workers were inside the houses and were buried by the slide.

The state-run Xinhua news agency said nine workers were killed at the scene while ten more died after being taken to hospital, putting the total death toll at 19. The two remaining workers were rescued from the rubble and were being treated at a local hospital on Saturday. Their condition was not immediately known.

The construction workers from China Railway No. 3 Group were working on a highway expansion project which will connect Huangling City to Yan’an City. Xinhua reported that local authorities have ordered a geological survey to be carried out to prevent similar landslides in the future.
