Thousands of dead fish wash up on beaches in Virginia, USA

It is not clear what caused thousands of dead fish to wash up on Northampton County beaches on Friday, July 1, a Virginia Marine Resources Commission spokeswoman said.
“We don’t know if it was a spill or if it was a lot of fish congregating in one area of the Bay,” said spokeswoman Laurie Naismith, adding, “It might not be a spill.”
The massive kill marred Chesapeake Bay beaches from Latimer’s Bluff to Fisherman Island, according to residents.
Omega Protein, which has a processing facility in Reedville, Virginia, told the VMRC they are investigating the incident and were immediately sending someone out to the area.
“They’ve already got people there cleaning it up,” Naismith said Friday afternoon.
It was the second incident in 10 days where massive amounts of dead fish washed up on Northampton County beaches.
A June 22 incident where thousands of dead menhaden washed up on a private beach near Machipongo was the result of a grounded net, but it was not known which company was involved, Naismith said at the time.
A similar fish kill happened in October 2015, when Omega Protein Corp. reported a fishing net tear to the VMRC that resulted in about 75,000 dead fish washing up on Chesapeake Bay beaches.

1,000+ geese killed due to avian flu in Tainan, Taiwan
More than 1,000 geese at a farm in the Xinhua District of Tainan in southern Taiwan were destroyed Monday after samples from the farm tested positive for a new strain of H5 avian flu virus, according to officials.
Officials of the city’s animal protection department said Tuesday that the farm owner reported abnormal deaths of geese on the farm July 1, and disease control experts who were sent to investigate found the remaining geese to be in low spirits and a bit distressed.
The experts took samples from the farm for testing and confirmed July 3 that a new strain of the H5 bird flu RNA virus had spread among the birds.
Animal protection officials followed standard procedure in culling a total of 1,048 geese on the farm and disinfecting the area, according to the department.
Monitoring of three poultry farms within 1 kilometer of the affected farm did not find anything abnormal as of Tuesday afternoon.
The officials said recent afternoon thunderstorms that created high humidity amid high temperatures might have had a negative impact on the geese’s immune systems, leaving them less resistant to the virus.

Tens of thousands of dead fish found in a river in Quebec, Canada
Wildlife officials in Quebec don’t have a good answer for why tens of thousands of fish in the Yamaska River, near Saint-Hyacinthe, are dead. The fish kill was first noticed on Thursday, but many of the fish had been dead for several days.
The fish kill has not been selective, as wildlife officials say the dead fish include minnows to large fish, up to 15 to 20 centimeters (6 to 8 inches) in length.
Christian Blanchette, the regional coordinator for Urgence Environment told CTV News that biologists and scientists came to the river on Thursday and Friday, trying to discover the cause of the fish kill. He said they were looking into several possible causes, including spills, sewage and construction waste.
