Thousands of dead fish found in a canal in Roeselare, Belgium

Fish Kill Alert

The service fire of Roeselare and civil protection were concerned Saturday throughout the day of the death of thousands of fish in the canal from Roeselare. Heavy rainfall in recent days could explain the phenomenon.

It rained abundantly especially Thursday evening in Roeselare, and large quantities of water spilled channel to channel. This sudden arrival would have created a lack of oxygen for the fish.

Civil protection will continue to remove dead fish Sunday.

Hundreds of kilos of dead fish ‘due to drought’ in the waters of Dieburg, Germany

Some red eel, Gudgeons, bream and trout were no longer to save. “We are headed to an emergency situation”, warns the Münsterer Klaus Däschler, Chairman of the fishing Sports Association and first husband of the Hessian Fischer (VHF) Association. The lingering drought, but also homemade error threatened springing from the Odenwald, to make a pretty dead trickle through Groß-Zimmern, Dieburg and Münster of flowing and later into the main Gersprenz.

Earlier, he made from large Zimmerner say fishing friends, was the most famous River in the Eastern District of Darmstadt-Dieburg in some places up to three meters deep. Today you could be lucky if the depth was at least more or less continuously at one meter. Behind the clubhouse of the Münsterer fishing is no longer the case: the water is barely 30 centimeters deep here. Can be there also hardly the talk of “Flow” — the more than 20 degrees warm water moves only slightly, is nearly.
Massive fish kills
The result could be a massive fish kills, the discovery Tuesday was just a precursor for this, afraid of Däschler. The persistent drought, although it was exceptional, he admits. The man but contributing by omission of certain measures and also by interfering in the Gersprenz to its current crisis.

As Däschler considered missing deepening of the river bed. The Gersprenz must be dug out in many places on 80 to 100 centimetres, repeatedly removed sediments. “The actions of the previous restoration are well and good,” he says. “The main thing is but neglected.” Only in those places where the water find an adequate bed, could it also flow and reach a depth that will meet even larger fish. In the Gersprenz also catfish, carp, roaches and even Northern Pike are next to eel, Gudgeons, bream and the local trout increased with land resources at home. “When the river bed can accommodate a meters water depth, there are at least 40, 50 centimeters when severe drought.” Still rich from also older copies, which are critical for the reproduction. It’ll be less, as now these fish in the heated threatened to die too low and low-oxygen Gersprenz water. “If we lose these large animals showered, it takes years until the stock has bounced back,” afraid of Däschler.
River bed too low
Problematic, in addition to the low beds, serviced and maintained sluices, Weirs and grid are also bad. And the extraction of water for agriculture and private gardens. The water “is taken from most of the time there, where for example a half a meter is slightly further, larger holes. Just there but the larger fish accumulate then”, says Däschler. His call: “more time brown spots on the home garden accept instead of to transport by water the Gersprenz crisis and the threat of the fish world still taking.”

Millions of shellfish and other marine creatures wash up on a beach in Hook of Holland, Netherlands

Tussen de massaal aangespoelde tweekleppige schelpdieren werden ook grote aantallen andere soorten zeedieren aangetroffen (foto: Ingrid Mulder)
Saturday 25 July 2015 many people will remember that when in Netherlands stayed still long. A heavy storm with heavy wind pulled over our country and especially the coastal provinces for this storm were the target. A lot of storm damage, and there were several injuries and even a fatal victim to regret. However, this storm for beachcombers with an interest in marine biodiversity a goldmine on. the day after the storm lay the North Sea Beach dotted with innumerable washed up shells and other sea creatures.

The day after the exceptional heavy summer storm of Saturday 25 July pulled members of the Dutch Malacological Association (NMV) to the North Sea Beach of Hoek van Holland. Here they went searching for washed up shellfish and other sea creatures that were deposited by the storm on the beach. That beach and then especially the part right next to the breakwater always delivers fun finds on. And after such a severe storm should you expect the number of only larger than normal.

What they found, however, exceeded all expectations. It was a huge treasure Chamber with unimaginable numbers washed up shells and other sea creatures. When they approached the beach they saw immediately that there hundreds or potentially thousands of gulls on the beach foerageerden. On the beach arrived they were surprised by the in some places even in mountains of 20 to 30 centimetres high piled shellfish and other marine life. Many of the shells were fresh copies with the meat there are still in. Washed up with the inspection of the material were the screeching gulls briefly at their lunch disturbed.

The first thing noticed were the large numbers of American sword schedes (Ensis directus) and Otter shells (Lutraria lutraria). It there were so much not to indicate whether the ten-or certainly hundreds of thousands and perhaps millions of copies were at the American sword sheath. The beach was local completely covered with shells. Between these shells were also massively Halfgeknotte Beach shells (Spisula subtruncata), Clams (Macoma balthica) and white dunschalen (Abra alba). Almost all copies were still alive or contain fresh meat remains.

Another 61 whales brutally slaughtered at ‘hunt event’, 490 killed since June, in Faroe Islands

This was the horrifying scene on a beach in the Faroe Islands yesterday
The carnage – which took place as 500 locals cheered – left Sandavagur Beach on the island of Vagur awash with gallons of whale blood.

It is the fifth slaughter of the season on the Faroes, which has seen 490 pilot whales killed on the archipelago since June.

Five members of Sea Shepherd conservation society – including British campaigner Lawrie Thomson – were arrested as they tried to stop the gruesome spectacle yesterday.

Sea Sheperd founder Captain Paul Watson said: “Our boat, Echo, tried to turn the pod but were overwhelmed by numerous Faroese boats who drove the whales back to the beach.

“The barbarian thugs are now knifing the pod, blood is pouring into the seas and the killers are celebrating their savage tradition.”

Canadian-born Captain Watson, who was an influential member of Greenpeace before he formed Sea Shepherd, added: “Our land team leader was stopped by the police before she could reach the water.

“It’s a bloodbath and this island has already taken more whales than they can possibly use. They kill for the sake of killing, for the love of killing.”

The ‘grindadráps’ are non-commercial, community-organised whale hunts open to anyone with a certificate in slaughtering a whale with a spinal cord lance.

There is archaeological evidence dating Faroese whaling back more than a thousand years ago and drive hunts back to 1584. Whale meat and blubber have been an important part of the islanders’ diets but there has been growing international condemnation of the slaughter.

Campaigners gave a detailed account of the lastest grindadráp, describing how its crews had tried to defend the pilot whales and named the five members arrested as Rudy de Kieviet of the Netherlands, obias Boehm of Germany, Alice Bodin of Italy, and Frances Holtman of the United States – and Lawrie Thomson.

All five have had their passports confiscated and will be required to remain in the Faroe Islands until further notice.

A small Sea Shepherd boat had been patrolling the area and arrived as the whale pod of whales was being driven to the Sandavágur ‘killing beach’.

Campaigners said their boat managed to get between the hunting flotilla and the whales and despite being drastically outnumbered, managed to re-direct the pod which may have numbered as many as 200 individuals.

On shore, five Sea Shepherd volunteers ran into the sea and tried to save a group of 61 whales that the hunters had managed to drive to the beach, but within two hours of the start of the drive, all were dead.

Captain Alex Cornelissen, chief executive of Sea Shepherd Global, said: “Once again, our crew have been arrested by officers of the Danish police force, with the blessing of Denmark.

“How much longer can the government of Denmark continue its arrogant support of this bloody practice, which is in direct conflict with its commitments to international law?

“This is Denmark’s shame, and this is Denmark’s responsibility, and this government must be held accountable for its actions under the terms of the European Union.”

So far, 12 campaigners have been arrested on the Faroes as part of its Operation Sleppid Grindini, the sixth pilot whale defence campaign on the archipelago.

Last year we reported how protestors held the world’s biggest animal rights demonstration in opposition to the “barbaric” slaughter of dolphins in Japan.

Up to a thousand furious demonstrators gathered outside the Japanese embassy in London to protest the “atrocious” killing of up to 20,000 dolphins, whales and porpoises in the country every year.

The majority of the creatures – including several thousand at the notorious Taiji Cove – are killed for meat but some are captured for zoos and aquariums.

Hundreds of dead fish found in a pond and river in Dallas, USA

Fish Kill Alert

The City of Dallas reported Friday that hundreds of fish have been found dead at two different locations as a result of “naturally occurring” conditions.

As many as 400 fish — primarily large carp — were found dead Thursday at the Pavaho Sump, near Winnetka Avenue and Canada Drive in West Dallas. Workers with Trinity Watershed Management removed most of the fish, but some could not be accessed “due to staff safety concerns.”

In a written statement, Assistant City Manager Mark McDaniel said water quality in the pond and the adjacent Delta Channel was “generally normal with the exceptions of warm temperatures and low dissolved oxygen.” He said the prolonged summer heat and a low water flow rate contributed to the fish kill.

McDaniel also said more than 150 dead fish were identified in the Trinity River near Scyene Road and Dixon Avenue in Southeast Dallas. “This incident remains under investigation, and water quality data are being collected and reviewed,” his statement said.

Both incidents have been reported to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

21 dead whales have been found during the past month in southeast Alaska, USA

Four B.C. whale deaths in a week baffle scientists

The discovery of four dead humpback whales in B.C. waters in a single week, just as Alaska is experiencing a surge of whale deaths, has scientists searching for a possible connection.

In the last few days, Canadian marine mammal experts have travelled north to Klemtu and Haida Gwaii to perform necropsies on two humpback carcasses, while another two dead whales have been spotted floating in Hecate Strait and off the west coast of Vancouver Island.

Meanwhile, 21 humpback and fin whales have been found dead in southeast Alaska during the past month, according to Paul Cottrell, Pacific marine mammal coordinator for Fisheries and Oceans Canada.

“It’s definitely a pulse of deaths and something that we’re going to keep our eye on,” Cottrell said.

No cause has been pinpointed for any of the deaths so far, and results from this week’s two necropsies in B.C. will take weeks to come back. Once they arrive, officials will share what they’ve learned with their counterparts in the U.S.

“These samples are very important to look at what may have caused the death of these animals, to see if there’s any relationship — whether there’s a pathogen that may be causing this,” Cottrell said.

The dead whale near Klemtu was first reported a few days ago when the carcass was still bobbing out in the water. A group of First Nations guardians tracked down the floating animal and towed it to shore so a necropsy could be performed.

Cottrell and veterinary pathologist Stephen Raverty have both examined the female whale, estimated to be more than nine metres in length.

Media reports have suggested it died after becoming entangled in fishing gear, but Cottrell said it is far too early to come to that conclusion.

“It’s an interesting one because there are scars on the tail stock that indicate there was at one time an entanglement, but the tissue’s fairly necrotized. The indications are that it may have been a prior entanglement,” he said.

The scientists also noticed wounds on the whale’s body. Samples of its organs, tissues and fluids have been sent for analysis to help narrow down the cause of death.

The whale that washed ashore in Haida Gwaii was a smaller female, measuring 7.5 metres long. Cottrell said there was no obvious cause of death.

In both cases, the carcasses were quite fresh, making it much easier to obtain accurate results from the necropsies. Cottrell said it’s absolutely crucial for members of the public to call the B.C. Marine Mammal Response Network at 1-800-465-4336 as soon as they see a dead or injured whale.

“The general public, they’re our eyes and ears out there,” he said. “The quicker we get these calls, the better.”

He’s hopeful that fisheries officials will be able to track down the two carcasses that are still floating out at sea so necropsies can be performed on those as well. Most, if not all, of the dead whales in Alaska have been spotted in the open ocean, so scientists there have a limited number of tissue samples to work with.

B.C.’s humpback whales have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in recent decades, but Cottrell said if the current deaths signal a serious threat to their recovery, scientists need to be aware.

32 dead dolphins have washed up THIS MONTH, ‘something is wrong’, along the coast of Bulgaria

Един от случаите на изхвърлен мъртъв делфин от вида морска свиня на брега край Равда тази година.
One case of discarded dead Dolphin from a porpoise species of Ravda Coast this year.[“Green Balkans”]
At least three times have increased the signals for the stranded dolphins dead in just the first 10 days of August this year. It’s mostly for young individuals of the species of porpoise/mutkur/indicate the data of nature conservation organization “green Balkans”.

Continue to arrive and new signals, therefore data are not yet systematized and summarized by the experts. Citizens from different parts of the Black Sea bring the responsible institutions and non-governmental organizations and distributed pictures and signals in social networks.

“Definitely the case since the beginning of this August are troubling a lot and are a sign that something is wrong,” commented on “diary,” the expert of Dimitar Popov “green Balkans”, who together with his colleagues examine the State of the dolphins and cares for their protection.

Popov commented that in previous years there has been so many stranded young dead dolphins, especially in August. The reasons for the high mortality

not yet been clarified,

explain by “green Balkans”. The same say and experts from the Ministry of environment and waters (MEW) in letter-response to the Secretariat of the international agreement on the conservation of cetaceans ACCOBAMS. the Organization has made a savetvane for details about the alarming trend in the Black Sea in August and fears that it is about “serious threats to dolphins, associated with high levels of noise from human activity”. By the Department ensure that regional ekoinspekcii react to alerts and take action on them, but so far have not clarified the reasons for the high mortality rate.

Since the beginning of August 2015 votes signals of dead dolphins on the coast of the Black Sea coast all are at least 32, show you the rough details of “green Balkans”, which have required statistics from regional ekoinspekcii in Burgas and Varna. About 80% of them are small dolphins of the genus mutkur. Its size is usually around 60-70 cm, which proves that individuals are aged not more than one year.

For comparison, during the whole of August last year – only 4 cases are (then there is only data for the Southern Black Sea coast, the REGIONAL INSPECTORATE-Varna doesn’t provide such) and in 2012 – this is the year with the most cases of dead dolphins on the coast so far – they are 14.

Up to August this year are the tragic cases of Coral Beach, where there are daily information about 1-2 cases – a total of 20 so far, according to Atanas Rusev by Association “to preserve the coral” who’s blog this weekend, the organisation published the text of the problem. 6 dead young dolphins from the beach there is a signal of the Krapets only on August 8, 6 – of shabla, 7-8 around Kamchia and 2-3 of shkorpilovtsi, Dimitar Popov indicated with the understanding that statistics are not comprehensive and are yet systematization of data.

In order to establish the causes of the mass extinction of the dolphins and it predominantly small, it is necessary to do an autopsy on the dead animals. This procedure is required a permit from the Ministry of ecology. The procedure is severe and often result in the transfer of responsibilities between institutions, showed a study of “blog” about a month ago.

“Unfortunately most carcasses of dolphins in August are not fresh and autopsies would not even helped a lot, although I believe that it is necessary to do,” komen IRA Popov and specifies that this capacity at the national level is very low.
