Thousands of dead fish found in a canal in Roeselare, Belgium

However, this storm for beachcombers with an interest in marine biodiversity a goldmine on. the day after the storm lay the North Sea Beach dotted with innumerable washed up shells and other sea creatures.
The day after the exceptional heavy summer storm of Saturday 25 July pulled members of the Dutch Malacological Association (NMV) to the North Sea Beach of Hoek van Holland. Here they went searching for washed up shellfish and other sea creatures that were deposited by the storm on the beach. That beach and then especially the part right next to the breakwater always delivers fun finds on. And after such a severe storm should you expect the number of only larger than normal.
What they found, however, exceeded all expectations. It was a huge treasure Chamber with unimaginable numbers washed up shells and other sea creatures. When they approached the beach they saw immediately that there hundreds or potentially thousands of gulls on the beach foerageerden. On the beach arrived they were surprised by the in some places even in mountains of 20 to 30 centimetres high piled shellfish and other marine life. Many of the shells were fresh copies with the meat there are still in. Washed up with the inspection of the material were the screeching gulls briefly at their lunch disturbed.

It is a fact that severe storms cause lots of damage and human suffering. But they also deposit always a real treasure room with lots of fresh and of a great number and many kinds of sea animals on the beach. Another 61 whales brutally slaughtered at ‘hunt event’, 490 killed since June, in Faroe Islands
The carnage – which took place as 500 locals cheered – left Sandavagur Beach on the island of Vagur awash with gallons of whale blood.
It is the fifth slaughter of the season on the Faroes, which has seen 490 pilot whales killed on the archipelago since June.
Five members of Sea Shepherd conservation society – including British campaigner Lawrie Thomson – were arrested as they tried to stop the gruesome spectacle yesterday.
Sea Sheperd founder Captain Paul Watson said: “Our boat, Echo, tried to turn the pod but were overwhelmed by numerous Faroese boats who drove the whales back to the beach.
“The barbarian thugs are now knifing the pod, blood is pouring into the seas and the killers are celebrating their savage tradition.”
Canadian-born Captain Watson, who was an influential member of Greenpeace before he formed Sea Shepherd, added: “Our land team leader was stopped by the police before she could reach the water.
“It’s a bloodbath and this island has already taken more whales than they can possibly use. They kill for the sake of killing, for the love of killing.”
The ‘grindadráps’ are non-commercial, community-organised whale hunts open to anyone with a certificate in slaughtering a whale with a spinal cord lance.
There is archaeological evidence dating Faroese whaling back more than a thousand years ago and drive hunts back to 1584. Whale meat and blubber have been an important part of the islanders’ diets but there has been growing international condemnation of the slaughter.
Campaigners gave a detailed account of the lastest grindadráp, describing how its crews had tried to defend the pilot whales and named the five members arrested as Rudy de Kieviet of the Netherlands, obias Boehm of Germany, Alice Bodin of Italy, and Frances Holtman of the United States – and Lawrie Thomson.
All five have had their passports confiscated and will be required to remain in the Faroe Islands until further notice.
A small Sea Shepherd boat had been patrolling the area and arrived as the whale pod of whales was being driven to the Sandavágur ‘killing beach’.
Campaigners said their boat managed to get between the hunting flotilla and the whales and despite being drastically outnumbered, managed to re-direct the pod which may have numbered as many as 200 individuals.
On shore, five Sea Shepherd volunteers ran into the sea and tried to save a group of 61 whales that the hunters had managed to drive to the beach, but within two hours of the start of the drive, all were dead.
Captain Alex Cornelissen, chief executive of Sea Shepherd Global, said: “Once again, our crew have been arrested by officers of the Danish police force, with the blessing of Denmark.
“How much longer can the government of Denmark continue its arrogant support of this bloody practice, which is in direct conflict with its commitments to international law?
“This is Denmark’s shame, and this is Denmark’s responsibility, and this government must be held accountable for its actions under the terms of the European Union.”
So far, 12 campaigners have been arrested on the Faroes as part of its Operation Sleppid Grindini, the sixth pilot whale defence campaign on the archipelago.
Last year we reported how protestors held the world’s biggest animal rights demonstration in opposition to the “barbaric” slaughter of dolphins in Japan.
Up to a thousand furious demonstrators gathered outside the Japanese embassy in London to protest the “atrocious” killing of up to 20,000 dolphins, whales and porpoises in the country every year.
The majority of the creatures – including several thousand at the notorious Taiji Cove – are killed for meat but some are captured for zoos and aquariums.

Hundreds of dead fish found in a pond and river in Dallas, USA
The City of Dallas reported Friday that hundreds of fish have been found dead at two different locations as a result of “naturally occurring” conditions.
As many as 400 fish — primarily large carp — were found dead Thursday at the Pavaho Sump, near Winnetka Avenue and Canada Drive in West Dallas. Workers with Trinity Watershed Management removed most of the fish, but some could not be accessed “due to staff safety concerns.”
In a written statement, Assistant City Manager Mark McDaniel said water quality in the pond and the adjacent Delta Channel was “generally normal with the exceptions of warm temperatures and low dissolved oxygen.” He said the prolonged summer heat and a low water flow rate contributed to the fish kill.
McDaniel also said more than 150 dead fish were identified in the Trinity River near Scyene Road and Dixon Avenue in Southeast Dallas. “This incident remains under investigation, and water quality data are being collected and reviewed,” his statement said.
Both incidents have been reported to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality and to the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.

21 dead whales have been found during the past month in southeast Alaska, USA

The discovery of four dead humpback whales in B.C. waters in a single week, just as Alaska is experiencing a surge of whale deaths, has scientists searching for a possible connection.
In the last few days, Canadian marine mammal experts have travelled north to Klemtu and Haida Gwaii to perform necropsies on two humpback carcasses, while another two dead whales have been spotted floating in Hecate Strait and off the west coast of Vancouver Island.
Meanwhile, 21 humpback and fin whales have been found dead in southeast Alaska during the past month, according to Paul Cottrell, Pacific marine mammal coordinator for Fisheries and Oceans Canada.
“It’s definitely a pulse of deaths and something that we’re going to keep our eye on,” Cottrell said.
No cause has been pinpointed for any of the deaths so far, and results from this week’s two necropsies in B.C. will take weeks to come back. Once they arrive, officials will share what they’ve learned with their counterparts in the U.S.
“These samples are very important to look at what may have caused the death of these animals, to see if there’s any relationship — whether there’s a pathogen that may be causing this,” Cottrell said.
The dead whale near Klemtu was first reported a few days ago when the carcass was still bobbing out in the water. A group of First Nations guardians tracked down the floating animal and towed it to shore so a necropsy could be performed.
Cottrell and veterinary pathologist Stephen Raverty have both examined the female whale, estimated to be more than nine metres in length.
Media reports have suggested it died after becoming entangled in fishing gear, but Cottrell said it is far too early to come to that conclusion.
“It’s an interesting one because there are scars on the tail stock that indicate there was at one time an entanglement, but the tissue’s fairly necrotized. The indications are that it may have been a prior entanglement,” he said.
The scientists also noticed wounds on the whale’s body. Samples of its organs, tissues and fluids have been sent for analysis to help narrow down the cause of death.
The whale that washed ashore in Haida Gwaii was a smaller female, measuring 7.5 metres long. Cottrell said there was no obvious cause of death.
In both cases, the carcasses were quite fresh, making it much easier to obtain accurate results from the necropsies. Cottrell said it’s absolutely crucial for members of the public to call the B.C. Marine Mammal Response Network at 1-800-465-4336 as soon as they see a dead or injured whale.
“The general public, they’re our eyes and ears out there,” he said. “The quicker we get these calls, the better.”
He’s hopeful that fisheries officials will be able to track down the two carcasses that are still floating out at sea so necropsies can be performed on those as well. Most, if not all, of the dead whales in Alaska have been spotted in the open ocean, so scientists there have a limited number of tissue samples to work with.
B.C.’s humpback whales have enjoyed a remarkable turnaround in recent decades, but Cottrell said if the current deaths signal a serious threat to their recovery, scientists need to be aware.

Tropical Storm Erika causes mayhem in the eastern Caribbean island of Dominica
Tropical Storm Erika pounded the eastern Caribbean island of Dominica on Thursday, unleashing flooding and mudslides that killed at least four people and knocked out power and water supplies.
The storm, which was forecast to reach Florida as a hurricane by Monday, dumped 9 inches (23 centimeters) of rain on Dominica late Wednesday, followed by another 6 inches (15 centimeters) early Thursday, according to the weather service in the nearby island of Antigua.
Police Superintendent Daniel Carbon said three of the deaths occurred during a mudslide in the southeast of the island. Authorities recovered the bodies of an elderly blind man and two children from the home.

Gas Pipeline Fire Injures 2 In Louisiana, USA
Two people suffered minor injuries after a fire at a natural gas pipeline near Marsh Island in Louisiana, Boardwalk Pipeline Partners LP said on Aug. 27.
The U.S. Coast Guard said earlier that day they responded to the natural gas pipeline fire, 25 miles south of Marsh Island on the night of Aug. 26.
The 10-inch pipeline belongs to Gulf South Pipeline Co, a wholly owned subsidiary of Boardwalk Pipeline.
The company did not provide a tentative timeline for the pipeline to resume normal operations.
Customers were not affected by the incident, and the cause of the fire will not be disclosed until an investigation is completed, the company said.
