Hundreds of dead fish found in a pond in Pilibhit, India

Fish Kill Alert

With more and more tourists flocking the Gohania pond in Pilibhit, it has become a threat for its fish. The boating facility here has turned the water body into a picnic spot and thousands end up in dumping garbage in the water, thus killing a majority of the fish.

On Wednesday hundreds of dead fish surfaced on the Gohania water and the loss incurred is expected to go up to Rs 1.5 lakhs.

“At first we suspected it to be a case of poisoning. However, it looks like the fishes died due to a severe lack of oxygen content in the water. This also happens when the water is contaminated and has toxic substances released by garbage or industrial waste,” said Hiresh Saxena, general secretary of UP medical and public health ministerial association.

Thousands of dead fish found in a channel in California, USA

Fish Kill Alert

Crews on Tuesday and Wednesday were cleaning up thousands of dead fish found in a drainage canal.

The fish were first discovered on Monday in the Ventura County Watershed Protection District Drain off J Street and Hueneme Road near the border of Oxnard and Port Hueneme.

On Tuesday, a biologist was at the scene evaluating the dead fish and taking samples from the water.  Pam Lindsey an ecologist with the watershed protection district said it is still unclear how the fish died, but at this point they believe a lightning strike is to blame.  Lindsey said a power pole adjacent to the channel was struck by lightning and at this point a lightning strike is the most plausible cause for the death of the thousands of fish.

The biologist at the scene said the most alarming discovery is the dead fish in the canal consist of at least nine different species including fresh water and saltwater fish.

County crews first arrived at the drainage canal on Tuesday morning to rescue the fish that were still alive and clean up the dead fish.  The county was working with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and California Department of Fish and Wildlife to find out what happened.

While it is still unclear where the fish came from, several local residents believe it might have something to do with the past weekend storm.  Residents who discovered the fish told NewsChannel 3 they believe that water levels rose during the weekend storms and then dropped suddenly, sending the fish from the Ormond Beach Lagoon to the drain and then stranding them there.

“We had lots of rain which is very welcoming, but hopefully this isn’t the result of all the rain and the fish coming up this way thinking it was a channel,” said Cheryl Hafstrom of Port Hueneme.

“Oh the smell is bad. It is rotten fish,” said Christina Lorenzona of Port Hueneme

The smell of the dead fish is noticeable for a good half-mile around the drain.  While the area is fenced off, kids were still sneaking around the fence on Tuesday to check out the dead fish against the wishes of county authorities.

A biologist at the scene said two endangered tidewater goby were found in the drain, but thankfully they were still alive and able to be rescued.

The cleanup is expected to be completed by Wednesday.

A necropsy is being performed on some of the fish to confirm the lightning strike theory.

Nobody knows for sure what were the causes of the fact. According to the Director of the Orca, Lupércio Aguilar, one of the possible causes can be a mass stranding
Dozens of stingrays were found dead on the edge of Camburi Beach in Victoria, on Tuesday morning (21). The Civil Police should investigate the fact to know if the reason of dead animals was natural or criminal order.

Nobody knows for sure what were the causes of the fact. According to the Director of the Orca, Lupércio Aguilar, one of the possible causes can be a mass stranding.

“As far as I can see this is a very rare phenomenon. I think a mass stranding of Manta Rays, whales and dolphins. With stingrays, the phenomenon is very rare and you only get news from a hit in Israel, in 2003, “says Aguilar.

Lupércio does not believe in the possibility of foul play. “I don’t think it was a crime, because the rays are worth money, and if they were handles in fishing nets they wouldn’t leave it like this, especially with that number so big”, he adds.

From the screenshots, it is not possible to have a certainty about what is the species of the animal, but it is believed that the animals are stingrays-nail (Dasyatis Americana), common species in the Bay of the Holy Spirit.

For oceanographer Bruno Berger rabbit, however, the motive of the animals can be an illegal practice commonly committed by fishermen at night in Cambridge.

“What happens is something very serious, are fishing trawlers from Cameroon, which is illegal, that’s been going on forever in Cambridge. On many nights this happens and we always informs the police and also with the municipality, for at least the fact, “he says.

In a statement, the Environmental military police (PMA) reported that a team will place this Tuesday (21) to verify the situation and report the facts in a case that will be presented at the station of Environmental Crimes, so that the Civil Police investigate the case.

The note stresses that environmental crimes are monitored in partnership between the environmental police with the municipal environmental agencies, in addition to the Instituto Estadual de Meio Ambiente e Recursos Hídricos (Iema) and the Institute of Agricultural and forest Defense of the Holy Spirit (Idaf).

Also note, the Iema reported that also sent a team to investigate the complaint of pollution in the case of stingrays.

42C heatwave begins in Cyprus – Code Yellow Warning Issued

Heatwave Warning

Another week of boiling weather has already begun, with forecasters predicting temperatures could rise as high as 42C by Tuesday.

The Weather Service issued a ‘code yellow’ weather warning on Saturday, meaning: “The weather is potentially dangerous. The weather phenomena that have been forecast are are not unusual, but be attentive if you intend to practice activities exposed to meteorological risks. Keep informed about the expected meteorological conditions and do not take any avoidable risks.”

The entire island is already basking in “wall-to-wall sunshine” as a swathe of blistering hot air sweeps in from Asia.

The heat wave will peak on Tuesday with temperatures reaching 42 degrees inland, a meteorologist told the Cyprus News Agency.

The mercury this weekend will average around the 38 degrees mark and will gradually climb above 40ºC, with 41 degrees being the average.

On the coastal areas slightly lower temperatures, ranging from 34 to 38 degrees, are expected.
TAKE PRECAUTIONS
The heat could have health impacts, causing dehydration and exhaustion, particularly in people over age 65, infants and young children, people with medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity, asthma or respiratory conditions.

People who have been consuming caffeine or alcohol are also at a higher risk of dehydration, public health officials said.

Extreme Heatwave Bakes Pacific Northwest For Second Month In A Row

Heatwave Warning

The Pacific Northwest once again dealt with an extreme heatwave to close out the month of July, and forecasters indicate that this won’t be the last time that the region will see of such weather.

The heat will continue to linger as a strong ridge of high pressure builds over the Northwest as the jet stream bulges northward, thus allowing temperatures five to 20 degrees above average to take hold of regions in Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Montana over the weekend, according to The Weather Channel.

Forecasters say the region saw its warmest June on record, and July set some records as well. Portland experienced a yearly high of 103 degrees on Thursday, the hottest day in the city since July 29, 2009.

Furthermore, the high at Sea-Tac Airport in Washington was 91 degrees on Thursday, breaking the record for the most amount of days the city experienced temperatures of 90 degrees or above, according to AccuWeather. The city tied its nine-day record from 1958 on Wednesday.

The heat isn’t just leaving locals miserable. It’s having adverse effects on the environment and local wildlife. The hot dry air is sucking moisture out of plants and warming up rivers and streams, which in turn is causing fish to die off. Furthermore, pasture lands are drying up, causing certain crops from growing properly, according to ABC News.

Those suffering from the heat might be relieved to know that forecasters predict the weather will cool down next week. They warn, however, that above-average temperatures are expected throughout the summer.
