Several thousand fish have died in the river Peene in Germany

Fish Kill Alert

In finding the cause of a mass extinction of fish in the Peene at Anklam, investigators have a first track. On Monday evening, a sewer pipe was discovered, from which flowed a strong smelling in ethanol liquid. The pipe had been turned off and samples taken, a spokesman said the water police Wolgast on Tuesday. It will determine suspicion of pollution against unknown.

The samples went to a laboratory. Must be clarified whether the introduction of this liquid is the cause of the fish kills or may yet year-zeitbedingter lack of oxygen has led to the death of thousands of fish. Dead fish were found upstream – and down the point of discharge, as the spokesman further said. The county on Monday spoke of a “massive scale” fish kills. Thousands fish floated dead on the Peene River or agonized dying for air, including meter long Pike, strong walleye, perch and other species.

Hailstorm hits pear production very hard in Italy

Severe Weather Alert

Hailstorms and high winds appear to have caused considerable damage to pear trees in Italy’s main production areas just as harvesting was about to start in earnest, casting a shadow over the initial months of the season.

With the financial impact estimated to be in the order of many millions of euros, producers in Emilia-Romagna, Modena, Ferrara and Reggio Emilia were counting the cost of Saturday’s storms, which sources suggest affected around 10,000 tonnes of fruit – mainly pears, but also some apples.

“In terms of intensity, hailstone size and duration, the damage caused to pear and apple production by the hailstorm that is difficult to calculate today,” Eugenia Bergamaschi, president of Confagricoltura Modena, told news agency AGI, referring to hailstones that were as large as 3cm in diameter in some instances.

“Even the anti-hail structures were hit, with nets broken and several poles uprooted by the weight of the hail,” she added.

Enrico Paradisi, president of Confagricoltura Modena’s National Association of Young Farmers, said the damage would potentially only be seen in the next couple of years.

“It’s not just the damage to the [fruit] that is worrying, but the damage that the plants have suffered,” he said. “In the coming days we will try to assess the damage, because the uncertainty is mainly about the 2016/17 production.”

Severe weather knocks down trees, damages homes in Michigan, USA

Severe Weather Alert

Severe weather that may have spawned a tornado knocked down trees and damaged homes in Michigan’s northern Lower Peninsula.

Linda Perakovic tells The Bay City Times that she was playing Yahtzee with her husband, son and daughter-in-law in the living room of her Ogemaw County home on Tuesday afternoon when a storm came through. She says: “It started raining, and then it started howling.”

Damage was seen in Rose Township, about 150 miles northwest of Detroit, as well as other areas. No injuries were reported.

Damage included downed power lines. A few miles away in Rose City, Zach and Courtney Oakes cleaned up fallen trees on their property.

The National Weather Service plans to survey damage on Wednesday to determine whether it was caused by a tornado or straight-line winds.
