Landslide kills 19 with more feared trapped in Tanzania

Landslide Danger Alert

At least 19 gold miners were killed in a landslide in Tanzania’s northwestern district of Kahama, with many more feared trapped in mining pits.

Justus Kamugisha, Shinyanga regional police commander, said on Friday 19 bodies had been recovered so far and rescue operations were underway.

He said the miners were buried alive on Thursday night by a huge landslide which was caused by weak poles that supported soil in areas with mining pits.

Rescuers were waiting for equipment from nearby Bulyanhulu Gold Mine, he said, putting a large number for those possibly trapped.

Witness Masanja Mgamba said the miners did not take precautionary measures before they went down the mining pits.

“Over 100 miners go down the pits daily. Let’s pray that there were not 100 when the landslide occurred otherwise it will be a disaster,” said Mgamba.

Spring storm dumps snow, rain in Fremont County, USA

Severe Weather Alert

The National Weather Service in Pueblo said the Cañon City area received about 1.62 inches of precipitation, which included rain and snow.

More rain in the coming days is expected.

According to AccuWeather.com, Saturday has a 60 percent chance of rain, with a high of 56. Sunday has a 50 percent chance, with a high of 52, according to the website.

Cañon City Police Department Capt. Jim Cox said the wintery weather did not cause any accidents within the city limits. Fremont County Sheriff’s Office Deputy Jeff Worley said the county responded to several accidents, but none of them were very serious. The Colorado State Patrol did not respond by press time.

There were various other accidents across the state.

Authorities say a dozen people have been injured after a multiple-vehicle crash involving a tour bus and a FedEx truck on Interstate 70 in suburban Denver in foggy weather.

The Colorado State Patrol says 12 people were taken to the hospital with minor to serious injuries in Friday’s crash in Aurora.

The Denver Post reports that the bus was carrying members of the Brooklyn-based band Twin Shadow from Lawrence, Kansas, to Denver for a show. The mother of keyboard player Spencer Zahn said he texted her to say that he was in pain but conscious.

In the immediate aftermath, firefighters worked to cut the driver out of the tour bus. It wasn’t immediately clear if the driver was among those taken to the hospital.
